I am about half way through book 8. Reading this thread has made me reconsider however that maybe my opinion of his work is outdated, my opinion was formed primarily of Family Guy and American Dad which whilst they started off OK became pretty tiring pretty quick with constant repetition of things that weren’t even funny in the first place like that chicken fight crap.

I will still look forward to the DCC adaptation for what it is but in the mean time I think I will try out some of his other work I haven’t seen to see if my opinion changes and can be updated as from looking at the dates Family Guy was over 25 years ago now which instantly makes me feel even older too!

That’s a fair assessment. A friend of mine also dislikes MacFarlane for the exact reasons you mention, but I keep bringing up the Orville to him because it’s actually very well written and is proof that he’s got the capacity to respect heavier themes.

I grew tired of MacFarlane’s humor pretty soon after American Dad hit the scene, but The Orville is damned good television.

I’d say the series feels 85% like Star Trek: The Next Generation (with a more prominent sense of humor) and 5% like what I would normally associate with Seth MacFarlane.

Sure 5% now, but earlier seasons featured his comedy a little more prominently haha. Honestly, I’m a fan either way.

Ironically the chicken fight is one of my favorite recurring gags, because it’s inane, random and yet still treated seriously by the combatants… Much like the events in DCC.
