In my small-ish city I can see a different show every single night, made up of mostly local and touring artists in small DIY venues that are 100 people or less. The advent of the internet has exploded creativity in so many different ways. Bands starting out can connect with other artists and fans in a DIY sense and play local gigs or tour without any kind of funding or record deals from corporate interests or private equity. Hell, I’ve gone to “clubs” that were like an old auto body shop ran by my friends, absolutely way past capacity in the hood, to see my partner open for acts from Kenya or at a tiny bar that had a really sick grindcore band from Brazil. It’s hard to say things like that happened regularly back in the day but who knows

And it’s not like people still don’t get big. I saw Alex G play in like backyards and tiny venues 12 years ago and now he plays one of the biggest venues in my city when they tour.

The view that music is washed up now just because the radio plays the same songs is pretty narrow. There was plenty of crap same-y boring music on the radio back then too. There’s a reason why all the rockers you’re talking about hated disco lol.

The creative types are always going to keep seeking out this type of thing and flourish. You could say the same about underground hip hop and rap, the club scene, punk, hardcore, jazz, EDM, folk, etc etc.

Lol I just found my burned CD-ROM of windows 10. I seem to remember asking on reddit how I can get a disk copy when they were offering a free upgrade from windows 7 to windows 10. Whatever, I’ve since moved onto Linux only for the last 5 years or so. The days of dual booting are long behind me. Funny enough in that pile of CD-ROMs was Ubuntu 10.04, the first distro I ever used. I remember doing a bunch of convoluted bullshit to get Oblivion to run on WINE haha.

Most office jobs are not overloading people with work like this in what I’ve seen in my career. It just sounds like a personal preference you have you don’t want to interrupt your work.

Since I’m on the shop floor I am working under strict deadlines and ship dates quite often but I’ll still make time for anyone for anything considering I work in testing and quality / design assurance of our product and I want to make sure everything is perfect by the time it leaves. I can always stay late to get things done.

I work in a shop in manufacturing and frequently need to email and/or teams message someone for information but there’s absolutely times I’m not even gonna bother and will just go right up to an engineer or draftsman’s desk with schematics to talk and work through stuff. Or I’ll just call them and ask them to look at something / talk. Is this not acceptable? Idk, if so I’m still gonna keep doing it, I really don’t care. I hate the back and forth waiting around bullshit of emails. Really the only time I email is if I need to involve multiple parties or I’ll teams message if it’s a quick question.

There’s really something valuable about talking about things in real time and looking at what we’re working on and how it’s designed and what the solution should be. Having a weird “let’s keep everything digital” attitude is prob one of my pet peeves tbh. I really don’t care if someone isn’t social, I wouldn’t judge them if they’re socially awkward. I would judge them if they won’t even give me the time of day or act like it’s a chore to have a work related conversation. Human beings are a social animal, no sense in shutting everyone out all day

I mean they have their own repos and take a position of “hardened updates” that are two weeks older than the bleeding edge ones of Arch. I used it briefly out of curiosity a couple years ago. It seemed generally fine, although I seem to remember having issues with some AUR stuff. That’s kinda to be expected and could even just be general fuckery on the part of the package maintainers, not manjaro. It could also be on manjaro’s fault lol.

I’ve just stuck to Arch since then. Garuda and endeavour OS are both cool but I don’t feel like I’m gaining much by using either. And Garuda includes a bunch of packages that I don’t even want.

I’m more interested in what manjaro can do in the mobile phone sphere. If they can build something viable yet fun to tinker with in the next few years that has a rolling release schedule, it could make for a cool Linux phone. Ubuntu touch is probably the more stable choice tbh, but that’s the beauty of Linux.

Man I could just not finish the first Alan Wake. The story and setting is ok, the Stephen King-like tropes are pretty heavy handed at times but in a good way. But the controls are god awful and the game does absolutely nothing to change anything about its gameplay of “shine light at monsters and run” for the whole game. It really shows its age playing it 15 years later, just feels clunky and bad. I couldn’t care enough about the story and gave up about 3/4 of the way through. Alan Wake 2 is very good however

There’s a few ways to play this game, saying this as someone who has sunk nearly 1000 hours over the years.

The main bus strategy is one of the most popular, and it is highly efficient. However this sucks all the fun out of the game for me. It feels like just tacking on yet another section of the factory and everything is already mostly figured out for you. The grid strategy with trains surrounding each square is even worse.

If this is how you guys are playing and it isn’t enjoyable, try just going full spaghetti. Half the fun for me is trying to squeeze in some new area and figuring out all the turns, underground belts and pipes, etc.

And the game really opens up when you get to Vulcanus. Most people pretty much abandon their Nauvis base other than for a few things like importing science.

The only subs that kept me around for years was r/electricians and r/askelectricians, which admittedly does usually have pretty accurate answers and info, and sometimes I just like to riff about work. Wrong answers get downvoted and removed at an almost scary speed.

But finally after like years of the same exact questions from homeowners that are just like “how do I wire a smart switch? What’s a switch loop / what do you mean my white wire is not a neutral? I took apart this mess of wires and didn’t take before pics how do I put it back together?? Do I need grounds???” I could go on lol. But I just realized how much a huge waste of time it all was. I wouldn’t call any of the troubleshooting or commenting “fun” it was just a way to pass time. I guess it’s better people get real answers than trust AI because a lot of time they try that first and post some of the answers these chat bots gave them and wheeeewwww boy are they some schizo hallucinated bullshit haha

I’ve been off all social media other than Lemmy for a while now. Since it’s not as active here it’s been better for me personally. It’s easy to refresh reddit and get a new thread every few minutes. On here I notice I’m seeing the same articles a couple times in a row and that’s my cue to hop off and read manga or play chess online instead or something.

Also yeah caps can go bad lol. We had these giant 18" tall ones on the solar industrial sites I worked at. This was 10 years ago so I forget the value I just know we had dozens of them each on 6 AWG wire. Part of our maintenance was to check for leaky ones. Because they’d leak then they’d eventually fail and then without the proper filtering for the system, usually the cabinet would catch on fire.

I went to the doctor’s yesterday and I always have really bad service there, I can barely get 3G. When I was there was when the total nationwide outage happened. I just assumed I lost service but I drove all the way home and was like hm my phone just can’t reconnect for some reason.

I troubleshooted it for like over an hour before I realized it was down for everyone haha. I had no data and couldn’t call/text.

I have mint mobile which uses T-Mobile towers. I literally live like within 100 feet of a cell tower which is why I was so perplexed

It was mostly a quip about replacing the convenience of something that fits in your pocket and is handheld. I like the idea, it could work for some people. Definitely not me, I’m not in front of a screen / PC for almost all of my day. I do stay in touch with people via texts / calls throughout the day however.

I love it for ease of use. It’s very straightforward, has given me few (if any) problems over the years on the OS level. The only real issues I ran into were specific to individual docker images. I like that I can open a web UI and jump right into the shell if needed. It’s very easy to install docker images and VMs

However, there is a caveat about how it stores data I suppose. Your use case of mirroring drives is not possible on unRAID. Instead, it uses one drive for parity and redundancy, or you can do dual parity if you’re really concerned about data loss. Basically how this works is your largest drive stores all the information about all the other drives to rebuild the data in case of drive failure, including the parity drive itself can be rebuilt if it fails. So say you had a 12 TB parity drive and a dozen or so other drives for the array. All of those drives can be literally anything so long as they are the same size or smaller than the parity. They can be 12 TB, 8 TB, 500 MB, old drives you shucked out of external storage cases, whatever. And you can add / remove these at will. The parity does not count to your max amount of storage, think of it like a mirror but for every other drive

Dual parity is an extra level of redundancy. It’s basically like say you had a drive fail, and in those couple days where you order a new one or whatever, or when the data is rebuilding itself, if another drive fails, your data is still in tact. I don’t bother because this would be such a rare occurrence. I do know data rebuilds are very high read/writes for days on a drive so it can be high stress on the drive so that’s why the extra protection exists, but I still think it’s overkill unless it’s like irreplaceable data you can’t lose (remember 3-2-1 backups in those cases)
