Every Russian no longer fighting for Ukraine is a good Russian. We should encourage deserting as that will make it easier for Ukraine.

I think they do but their own commanders shoot them before they can desert.

I’m surprised the journalists are reporting their full names. Russia isn’t known for leaving these people to live their lives in peace. No doubt Russia has its own ways of finding these people, but we don’t need to make it any easier for them.

This is exactly why they want their name published. Germany only grants asylum for people who are in danger in their home country. Having your full real name published as a deserter is a sure fire way of making sure that is the case for them.

I imagine Russia has a list of deserters. This just tells them some of those deserters are in Germany.

But I do agree, very strange to write out the full name of someone who is not a public figure or a criminal. I would not appreciate that.

I imagine Russia has a list of deserters.

Maybe, maybe not. Often, it might be difficult to tell the difference between a deserter and a dead soldier left rotting in a field somewhere. An article like this might mean the difference between “MIA” and “target to make an example of”.
