This is Coco, about 10 minutes before getting lost in a state park. After 41 days of hiking, camping, drone searches, trapping a LOT of the innocent local wildlife (they all got a meal and treated well), he was finally done with kitty Rumshpringa. I found him sitting on a pile of rocks next to the entry to the park. No worse for wear other than a bot fly larva in his neck. Don’t listen to all the negative Nancys that tell you “Oh if you haven’t found them by now, they are long gone!”.
The actual search story gets wild. Armed meth cooks and getting lost in 10" of snow. But at the end, it wasn’t any of my effort, he just got bored and wanted to go back home.
Yeah, my cat was gone almost 2 months and someone reached out having seen a post on lostmykitty.com which I definitely ridiculed my wife for making saying that no one is going to look there. He survived, but shrunk from a big burly boy down to skeletor status. Unfortunately for him, his kidneys didn’t appreciate his decision to walk the earth, and gave out on him like a month after we got him back and we had to put him down. He was super old at that point, and and while it’s sad he didn’t make it, we were just glad we found him and at least got a bit more time with him.
When my indoor cat escaped one night as I was coming home, I spent days looking for him. We’d go out every night and would see the paw prints he left on neighbours doors scratching to get in. We found him after 7 days, thankfully, but in my search I found a neighbour who said that when he first moved to the complex, his cat escaped and he thought he was gone for good. He gave up eventually but THREE YEARS LATER, his cat came roaming around again. Them cats are wild.
I’ve found most cat harnesses are more of a gentleman’s agreement. If they want out, they’re going to get out. I’m open to suggestions, tho. This big boy doesn’t get to go very far out of the neighborhood anymore.
My cat escaped for a weekend because he got a fright and slipped out of his harness. I’ve found that wrapping the leash around his body, under the harness is somewhat more secure.
That way, if they pull, the leash tightens behind their elbows and reduces the possibility of them pulling out of it.
Seeing that I packed out over a dozen bags of litter during the search, hopefully a net negative. And I’m betting he got by more from stealing campers food like a little Yogi bear than he did his hunting prowess.

Friend you can not leave the story here … go on
I’ll make a post here soon. I need to write it down before I forget details.

What brand of halter is that so I can be sure not to buy it?

I wonder how much ecological destruction Coco was responsible for during that period lol
