I became an e-scooter guy in June.
And I’ll say, my experience has been that 99% of drivers are reasonable people, but that 1% I’ve encountered who are actively hostile to people on two wheels are heckin’ scary. Scary enough that I’ve modified my scooting habits on the off chance that I run into another one.
Drivers are actively hostile to infrastructure that supports those of us on two wheels, though, at least outside of cities. That’s undeniable. They’d rather get where they’re going 60 seconds earlier than give up half a lane so cyclists can get where they’re going safely.
The selfishness I see on the road everytime I go out, is why I dont like going anywhere.
Every time I leave the house, with 90% of my travels being in town mind you, I see a minimum of three people blowing through red lights because theyre going too fast, and when they see the yellow and do the “I can make it” but, dont.
My light turns green, I pause, I look for folks running reds before I go. It’s so bad.
Last time I walked to the store, my son and I almost got hit by an old man in a giant truck, who was turning right on red, but didnt bother to stop or look to turn right on the red. Youre supposed to stop before you do this. We had the crosswalk light.

My friend got severely injured by someone turning right on red who didn’t see her.
It really is a barbaric law that allows it; it is just so goddamn convenient for car drivers. Not sure how to get rid of it…

Honestly, same. The general selfishness and entitled nature of drivers is infuriating.
I have become accustomed to having to be the careful one. Just this morning I had cars crossing my bike lane paying zero attention on three occasions in a two-mile stretch, and one of them noticed me after they turned and shook their their head at me. A lot of people don’t appreciate the fact that they’re in a 3000 pound death machine and, maybe, they should be able to take a fraction of a second to look before they turn.

Thanks, doing my best. And you’re right, culturally everyone thinks it’s solely my job to be safe and not the motorists.
Policy issues. We could fix this with policy and regulation. It is beyond frustrating to see the solutions, not be implemented. So that this way, I do have to wish you to be safe so no one hits you.

This is a great video! I live in San Diego, and my bike is my primary transportation. I bike more than I drive. There are some protected bike lanes, but not nearly enough. Overall, it isn’t too bad, but there are places where I have to dice it out with cars.
I feel like it is even crazier in the UK. For some reason the trans hate and bike hate is even more advanced over there as part of their culture wars…
I’m anti-car but there are so many bad bikers out there.
yeah, so? it’s like complaining that there are a lot of bad painters, or even people who don’t walk very well. “Bad bikers” are not a societal problem the way motorists, even the best motorists are.
