Hasn’t science already disproven this years ago? I swear coffee is routinly associated with with negative health problems and then years later contributed with good health things.
At this point, it would be easier to publish the much shorter list of things we can eat and drink and do that won’t kill us.
- nothing
Ironically enough if you eat nothing, it will kill you much faster.
That hot drinks cause oesophageal cancer has been known since 1998 - I was working in green tea research in the early 2000s and read this article back then. From the abstract:
There were 440 oesophageal cancer deaths during the period from January 1966 to December 1981. Person-years at risk were 3,065,182 in total. Rate ratio and 95% confidence interval adjusted for attained age, prefecture, occupation and sex were (RR (95% CI)): 1.6 (1.2-2.0) for hot tea (drinking green tea at high temperatures) in comparison with not-hot tea (drinking green tea at moderate temperatures); 2.4 (1.8-3.1) for daily (4 times/week or more) alcohol drinking in comparison with non-drinking; and 2.3 (1.7-3.1) for heavy smoking (15 cigarettes/day or more) in comparison with non-smoking.
So they found that hot tea increased the risk by 1.2-2 times, which is not completely out of line with this study - the Japanese study was 220 thousand people, and this one was almost a million, and it’s in a different country at a different time, so there will be other factors.
I wonder if there is contributing comorbidities involved. Cause I know I reach for a cigarette with my morning coffee.
Common cold beer gang W 😏
Hot take incoming(pun kinda intended), I like my beer room temp, but my water ice cold.
Could also means could not
“Very hot” according to the article is 70C (158F). This is well above the human threshold for pain of about 48C (118F).
TLDR; if something hurts, don’t do it
Yeah, this makes some intuitive sense too. If you’re drinking something hot enough to actually kill cells, you’ll need to replace cells more frequently. More cell replication means more chances for cancer to occur.
I like hot tea but yeah 70°C is kinda sorta too hot. I blow on it before drinking anyway
Good to know, but what isn’t a risk these days? The water is contaminated, the food is riddled and the air is polluted. Life is cancer in 2026.
I’ll never understand why anyone would swallow very hot drinks. The article is mostly about that, hot coffee or tea can still be pleasantly warm and fine. But I knew people who drink their coffee painfully hot and… why? To feel ALIVE?
Granted I also don’t understand why people smoke or drink alcohol so… eh.
Best I can guess is they like the pain. Similar to spicy food maybe?
Outside of the holidays I usually drink coldbrew. Nice to know that I’ve been unintentionally protecting myself…
The best part of this is that the researchers give numbers like “6 hot drinks a day”. These patients were literally burning away the lining of their esophagus, inducing cancer through the brute force method of chronic injury and new cell creation. Hot drinks account for 1/7 cases in the UK.
Other risk factors for this type of cancer include smoking and alcohol consumption.
Would you mind sharing your method on how you prepare coldbrew? I tried researching this before and found only garbage SEO spam websites.
I’m not the person you asked, but I do have answers.
I have a French press, so I often use that. The preparation is exactly the same as a hot press except for the time and temperature; same grind, same proportions of water to coffee. Just mix the coffee and cool water and wait to plunge for several hours. It would usually be something I’d prepare the night before, leave on the counter, then plunge and pour in the morning.
You can do the same thing with larger volumes/masses of coffee and water using a mesh bag and a pitcher. Same process just more. Also avoid squeezing the bag too much, but do let the coffee run out as you remove the bag containing the coffee from the pitcher.
No problem. My tongue makes drinking anything more than slightly warm too painful.
then I shall die cozy
If only cancer was like that…
