In a leaked document, the Irish Presidency proposes to EU Member States that the interest of AI companies to make profits should take precedence over the fundamental rights of Europeans.
I know there are some serious AI haters on Lemmy and they will say we should not use AI at all. I can see where they are coming from, considering the downsides of AI. But if you want to use it and have the option to stay away from OpenAI’s / Anthropic’s / Google’s / etc platforms, two more privacy-friendly options are Proton’s Lumo and Duck.ai (from DuckDuckGo). They aren’t as advanced as the top-tier models but they are definitely good enough for me.
This general allowance would also apply to individuals who have never been customers of an AI company, or to data entered decades ago, for example in chats or on social media. All personal data that an AI company can somehow get its hands on would fall under the provision. There is no need to ask users for consent – companies are automatically assumed to have an overriding “legitimate interest” if they train or use any AI product.
How does using lumo or duck.ai help with that exactly?
The less people use ai that collects data, the less 3rd party data end up there. Example. Imagine your neighbour shares personal data about you every day with ChatGPT, and they switch to an alternative that respects everybody privacy the new data about you does not reach OpenAI and the companies they sell your data to.
The AI haters on Lemmy do not see the middle ground. They are so hellbent on people not using AI at all they seem to forget the fact that not all companies are equally evil. If people are going to use AI, better to guide them to the most ethical ones.
Hater here. Doing 40% of a shitty thing is still doing a shitty thing. Re: privacy, your chats may not be tied to your identity, but if you believe that the companies running those models aren’t using those chats for training data, you haven’t been paying attention.
Continue hating all you want, but you won’t convince me someone doing 2 bad things is equally bad as someone doing only one of them. It’s not black and white and I’m not so blind i can’t understand why you hate, you don’t have to explain it.
