ROME, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Venice is looking at expanding its tourist entry fee, applying it for a longer period of the year and raising the daily charge to as much as €30 ($34), a senior official in the city government has said.
Budget and taxation councillor Michele Zuin said the current fee of €5 to €10 was too low to safeguard against overtourism, but said the new price for 2027 would have to be discussed and agreed with the government.
They should just keep the visitor caps with the fees equal. My cousin is Venician but moved to Treviso because Venice is ruined. He’s now thinking of moving again because Treviso is becoming ruined by proximity to Venice.
If you go to Venice today, it feels like 80% tourists and like 50% of them are Americans. It’s like going to a Disneyland. Most people on gondolas or water taxis are just posing hard for selfies or swapping with a friend if they’re not solo. The regular boats are so packed, it’s faster to just walk across town and it’s not an enjoyable walk.
Last week’s I saw a guy propose on a gondola, just as it was heading under the Bridge of Sighs by the old prisons. I’m sure he thought it was romantic to propose in Venice, but couldn’t help but laugh at the irony and hope it’s not an ill metaphor for the future bride.
Really, it’s last heyday was 80s/90s. If you’re not with a local, it sucks. Oh, and the pickpockets…
Go quiet season, walk around at night, that’s as close to Venice as you can get nowadays.
Edit: Eh, I shouldn’t give it so much shit. There’s plenty of spots to still enjoy. Just sucks… Like, something really special has to be going on to make the trip out there. For me it was the Palestinian artists exhibition then walking down to the ghetto and just taking all that history in and wondering how it’s all worked out like it has.

That’d see the daily visitors plummet, considering it’s sometimes over 20K a day which is like half the population. Hearing American is so common and hearing Italian is rare, since locals tend to all be working or stay away from the main areas until the Starbucks is finally empty. Plus Italians just avoid Venice, even with the regional/local pass.
If they cap the tour groups more to like 10 people, that would probably help.

That’s totally understandable. But the method they are using is, as always, at the expense of the poor.
