      Yeah, this doesn’t track

I voted for Nader in 2000 who ran on a platform of getting corporate money out of government. After 8 years of being mad at Clinton for defunding welfare, NAFTA and bombing folks (though still thankful we weren’t in the nightmare of the Gulf War,) I felt the difference between Gore and Bush JR wasn’t enough and I needed to let the corporate Democrats know they need to work for my vote.

I also thought there was no way Bush would get elected 'cause he was obviously dumb as a brick, and his daddy was a nightmare that oversaw Iran/contra affair and the failure that was Gulf War. Gore ran on maintaining the balanced budget and was concerned about global warming

Bush won, bringing about: Record debt Homeland security TSA Iraq War 2 Afghanistan War Repeal of environmental protections SUVs Freedom Fries Cancelling musicians for even slight protest of government 2008 crisis

      Yay

Nope, still 100% correct. It doesn’t matter which evil wins, if you shown you’re willing to vote for it, that’s the new “best we can do”.

The culture has moved left, the Democratic Party has moved right in both absolute terms and much more so relative to the culture. Remember when Reagan was a horrible right wing nightmare here to destroy the US economy?

Remember how Clinton’s economic policy was to the right of Reagan and the DNC has been running rightwards ever since?

Remember when Biden broke the railway strike?

Maybe before dismissing something as being “by a 20 year old” (especially an image that’s been floating around the Internet for most of twenty years), you should take a minute to actually understand what it’s saying.

The median elected Democrat today is to the right of the median elected Republican of 1986 on every issue except for the designated culture war issues they use to differentiate themselves to the politically illiterate.

Republicans in 1986 were calling for massive deregulation, strong shrinking of the fed givernment, strict ban of abortion, return of school prayer, escalation of war on drugs, massive peacetime military buildup, funding anti communist insurgency around the world

And Democrats delivered all of that, or helped at a minimum.

              Massive Deregulation?

              Clinton, Obama, and Biden.

Shrinking the Federal Govt? How do you think Slick Willy balanced the budget? What do you think he meant when he said we’d “end welfare as we know it”?

              Strict ban on Abortion?

The GOP couldn’t have done it without (1) Obama going back on his campaign promise to codify Roe v Wade (2) RBG’s refusal to step down during Obama’s term (3) Dems rolling over when McConnell stole a SCOTUS seat (4) Hillary and the DNC committing political malpractice and blowing what should have been a lay-up in 2016.

              School Prayer?

Ok, you got a point for this one. But you’ll notice even now, when the rules are made up and court precedents don’t matter, the only places they’re doing this are the deepest of deep red states. Why do you suppose that is?

Escalation of the War on Drugs

I shouldn’t need to say anything other than “Biden’s 1994 crime bill”. But I will also point out that increasing the funding for the War on Drugs has been fairly bipartisan for the last forty years, but Clinton and Obama both massively increased it, so I’m pretty sure if I bothered to find the numbers that Dems have added more funding than the GOP in that time.

              Massive Peacetime Military buildup

Again, completely bipartisan. And Harris promised “the most lethal military on Earth”, which doesn’t exactly sound like a call to slow that down, does it?

              Funding anti communist insurgency

Lol. Lmao, even. Tell me you’re not gonna pretend the Dems aren’t doing the exact same thing, are you? Are you really? Shame, up to this point I was taking you seriously.

I guess we can’t count ACA either

We’re absolutely counting that. But we’re counting what it actually is and not what you were told it was.

The ACA is a piece of Heritage Foundation written legislation whose purpose was twofold: vastly increase private health insurance profits, and completely kill any momentum for passing anything actually progressive on healthcare. Given that we still have medical bankruptcies and that the years after the full ACA implementation contained a period where absolutely every private insurer posted five consecutive quarters of record profits, it appears to have succeeded admirably. In exchange for that massive transfer of wealth from both the working class and the Treasury, we got: milquetoast pre-existing conditions coverage, and the college-age children of the donor class with their Cadillac employer sponsored plans for to stay on their parents awesome insurance through college until they could join the grift on their own.

We helped Obama sell the cow to Wall St for a handful of magic beans, and you want to pretend that isn’t evidence of how far right the Dems have lurched?

Americans still can’t afford to see a doctor. But now they pay a premium for the privilege of not being able to afford basic care.

So we’re definitely counting the ACA. But it’s evidence for my point, not against it.

Which issues are the modern democrat to the right of compared to 1980s republican?
