A Russian Su-35 fighter jet shot down a Russian military Mi-8 helicopter in the Voronezh Region after mistaking it for a drone, killing all three crew members…
You’d think in a conflict where both sides are operating the same equipment, they’d invest in some robust IFF. Just one more example of Russia’s competence problem.
Mate, when I was in the navy, I once prevented a US warship from shooting down its own helicopter, returning from a medevac, from fucking Germany. Before the Russian invasion into Ukraine, when the Baltic was completely safe. The ship was hailing warnings on the wrong channel while their heli forgot to enable their IFF.
I checked all exercise messages and plannings, to find out they were giving actual real life warnings on their own helo, which popped back up over land an hour after it dropped at the same spot. I hailed the US warship, telling their hostile unknown contact was friendly, callsign of their helo, seconds after their final warning and their notification to the battle group they were going to engage the target. Seconds before actual fire. I’ve seen more competence from the Russians than from the Americans, although the Russians definitely do not score high on the competence scale. Yet still the highest score for blue on blue action by far is still a title held by the US.
I mean, they even managed to live fire a Turkish warship bridge to pieces killing its crew and the battle group staff during a fucking exercise. They paid it off with 4 OHP frigates and a few million dollars.
The article claims they mistook it for a drone. A decent distance from the frontline where it should be fairly safe to use transponders. I don’t know, that seems worse to me than mistaking it for a Ukrainian Mi-8.

They just need to paint bigger Z’s on their stuff, I’ll be fine.
