This is where I find the Greens not effective.

Banning it from being livestreamed is impossible and will do nothing.

The government should be condemning the US government for still having the death penalty, and use this as an opportunity to make the arguments to why the death penalty is stupid.

And further why it’s so important for us to not be wholly in bed with the US on everything.

Very strange criticism for a minor party that is not in government.

The government should be condemning the US government for still having the death penalty, and use this as an opportunity to make the arguments to why the death penalty is stupid.

Is this supposed to be your very sensible, realistic alternative? Have you been paying attention during the last decade of Australian/US relations?

And further why it’s so important for us to not be wholly in bed with the US on everything.

This is the position of The Greens, and has been for years.

What I mean is effective in their political messaging.

I don’t disagree with them on this, otherwise. It’s fucked. And should be prohibited on all Australian media, online or otherwise.

But part of the conversation now, annoyingly, is whether it’s even feasible to ban all streaming.

I will admit that my criticism was probably a bit overblown, and influenced emotionally by my general dislike of the Greens’ ideas about affecting societal change. (i.e. they’re not anti-capitalist, aren’t democratic in their party structure, and believe we can reform our way to something better through parliament)

I’ll take them over Labor any day though, their heart is in the right place as a party.

Fair enough, I appreciate you adding some nuance to your argument and I can see where you’re coming from. I think their argument for a ban is actually way more feasible than Labor openly criticising the US, though. Labor clearly tries very hard to avoid offending this US administration and would never take a such a strong stand on an issue like this.

Whether a ban would actually be effective in terms of stopping every Australian from viewing the execution is another issue, but in terms of actually implementing something that may have some level of effect, a ban is pretty sensible. That’s exactly the type of solution Labor would go for.

I kind of agree in the sense that (in my view) preventing Australians from watching the US execution is a kind of a fridge issue - possibly a distraction from more important issues, possible a unnecessarily divisive position for The Greens to take. (Probably most people agree that broadcasting the execution is bad; but many people are sensitive about censorship.)

So in that sense perhaps it is a politically unsavvy thing for The Greens to take a position on. But on the other hand, saying & doing stuff like this is what gets them into the media. When The Greens are only talking about pencil-pushing bean-counting by-the-numbers sensible policies on core issues - they are simply ignored. A few people nod and say ‘fair call’, and no one says anything. No one spreads the word. And so very very few people hear anything about it. So when The Green stick to their core message, they just don’t heard. So these little provocative foraying to side-issue end up being pretty much the only news many people hear about The Greens at all.

Since the inception, USA has always been imperialist and since the end of World War II, has been involved in more global conflicts than any other countries. USA merely operates on “lesser evil” framework. And up until recently, USA has been secular, but democratic? Hardly to begin with. Just ask black Americans, Native Americans, Filipinos, Vietnamese, Iraqis and Latin Americans. The US ignored the UN resolutions many times, especially on not invading Iraq under false pretense of hiding weapons of mass destruction. So, USA has always been a terrorist state but in different name and face. I would go so far as to say that Trump took off the facade of the country as the shining beacon on the hill. After all, American people had been demanding for authenticity.

Nobody cares about “imperialism”, they care about living standards, representation, and economic prosperity. America has strived to realise these ideals and helped other nations reach them to through its international humanitarian efforts and security guarentees.

Any failure to meet their own standards pales in comparison to actual terrorists who don’t have those standards to begin with, so your use of that word really exposes your ignorance.

Btw the UN means nothing, it’s a glorified group chat for tinpot dictators and despots. A majority of the member states fall below 6 on the democratic index, i.e. they are corrupt authoritarian shit-holes.

Sorry to say this to you lib, but if Saddam wasn’t toppled, ISIS would not even have come out in the first place. Saddam’s secular regime was what was stopping the theocratic terrorism that you yourself had been criticising. So if you want to talk about “lessor evil”, then maybe you should not be doing your own terrorism. You created ISIS simply because your country wanted oil at the obvious pretense of “spreading freedom”.

Exactly, to spread terror. You’ve correctly identified that motive is a part of the definition. Congrats.

The US is chiefly concerned with fighting militants for material strategic goals, and has laws against targetting civilians.

ISIS is chiefly concerned with butchering anyone, regardless of civilian status, to gain, and maintain through fear, power in a region.

Hmm, who does that remind me of? Israel? Yes, that shining beacon of democracy that gets almost unlimited weapons of mass destruction from the US to kill a majority of unarmed civilians.

And btw, the US may have “laws against targetting civilians” but it doesn’t mean these laws are followed. There are ample records of this.

Ample records of disproportionate strikes? Yes. Ample records of targetting civilians? No. Those rules of engagement are absolutely followed, and we know this from the thousands of instances where strikes were called off because civilian presence in the area changed. They keep endless records because they are accountable to Congress.

It’s a moot point when comparing America to ISIS because terrorists definitionally don’t have any concept of proportionality because killing civilians is the goal.

I don’t really care to argue I/P, that conflict is forever fucked and nobody knows anything about it.

Iraq and Saudi Arabia don’t do public executions these days, and none of them besides the US live stream them. Apparently they’re the first country to ever do it.

The real problem is the reasons some of these countries condemn people to death, regardless of the barbarism they engage in while carrying it out.

The US’s actions are only notable because they are held to a higher standard, rightly so.

I don’t think the US empire is held to a higher standard. I say this holding nothing against everyday US citizens. I mean the power structure of the US has been mistrusted for a very long time but because of their financial/military power, most countries have bowed their heads to them. Not necessarily out of respect.

It is the propaganda narrative which every US citizen grows up with that makes them think they have a high standard.

I mean if you want to argue that it should be an even standard across the board I might agree with you, like I would hold Iran in infinitely lower esteem for hanging political dissidents, to say nothing of them doing it publically.

But something rubs me the wrong way about America, the shining city on the hill, even dipping its toes in this kind of barbaric spectacle.

Whether it’s because I hold them to a higher standard, or because I view it as a betrayal of what liberal democracy means.

It’s only platforms like YouTube that will be able to stream it censor free.

And therein lies the rub. Most are aware of this. And so they call for it to be stopped. Even as they ponder the ability/outcome of censorship…

A website is not a broadcast. So, it can (and would) disallow the content from being broadcast on TV. But not from a webpage.

While we are at discussing the idea, it kinda won’t work. You can block all of the Internet or none of the Internet. You can’t block some of the Internet. If you ‘block’ a site from Australia, people can and will simply VPN to another country and access it there.

How myopic. I didn’t realise America’s sole focus since it’s inception has been terror and barbarism. I guess PEPFAR, USAID, the civil rights act, the Marshall Plan, fighting smallpox and polio, and international disaster relief were just cosmic whoopsies that materialised from the ether.

Play it live on every channel, every screen in the country. Put it on repeat. Show it on street corners and in pubs. Show it in primary schools and high schools. Everyone should see what we’re endorsing by being a US client state. Let those who want to revel in their inhumanity go over every sick detail with glee.

Yep. Show the homeless. Show the millions in penal servitude. Show the working poor. Show the communities racked by drugs and violence. Show the school massacres. Show the executions. Show the lynchings. Show the Epstein files. Even most Americans don’t know the truth of their country.

They know. They have always known. We spent years thinking they just accept it, recent years show they don’t just accept it, they perpetuate and some instances cheer it on.

Well if Covid wasn’t enough of a window. I don’t know what else anyone else can do to show how fucking dumb humans truly are.

My mother included. She’s now a self confessed, self congratulatory, fully immunised, cooker.

It would seem that way, but the truth is somehow worse. Most Americans simply don’t care. It’s not that they don’t know enough to care, they simply don’t care enough to know. Accepting it, perpetuating it, or even cheering it on takes some degree or stage of caring in one way or another, most Americans (and dare I say Westerners in general) aren’t even interested in the conversation.

It’s funny to me you’re listing things we’re already aware of thanks to the US being a transparent western democracy. Things that are the subject of heated discussion within the country as well.

Eh? Why would we have it ‘live streamed’ anyway?

Besides that; All of our FTA tv channels will blur anything remotely confronting as a matter of course.

You tube is where you’ll get your jollies. And the Australian government can’t/won’t censor that…

The Australian government was able to remove access to social media for under 16’s to ‘protect them’, so why aren’t they able to remove access to live streamed murder?

        able to remove access

No they weren’t, they just said they could. Any kid who wants to access it, especially the worst bits, still can

This is hopefully a 1 time ‘event’, blocking access to this would have an immediate effect, the issue would be that once this is online, there will be multiple ways in future to view it, and sick f*cks who wish to do so.

A decent government would still oppose this, and would attempt to block access to it.

Definitely, no argument here and the government should be clear on it.

This is a fucking disgrace. I’m not surprised though.

Remove access is not the same as remove content

Being a pedant is not the same as making a valid point.

Hmmm… You know what, I don’t actually know the technical means by which a government blocks something.

Do they have to contact the Internet Asigned Numbers Authority or something? Or is it done via contacting the major ISPs? Or some Australian exit point?

No idea, I was surprised that they were able to get social media to comply with their censoring the young from information bs, since Australia is such a small market.

“Livestreaming US execution would breach prohibition of torture, UN rights office warns” https://news.un.org/en/story/2026/10/1168565

Every nation should be doing whatever they can to block access to this, and should also be opposing the usa’s choice to be even sicker f*cks than they normally are.

The Social Media ban was apparently funded by Murdoch, because social media sites aggregate news and steal clicks from him, and so he wants to limit their reach.

That plus I imagine we’re a signatory to international courts, so could technically sue Facebook and what not. That plus Murdoch funding = massive change.

…and Murdoch went easy on Labor come election time in exchange. So it was feasible for all involved. Unfortunately.

They were able to geoblock the 2024 attempted stabbing of the orthodox protest, but I don’t think they were able to get it taken down. Pretty sure that the Christchurch massacre was taken down though

Both were after the fact though. Which I am sure they will have the court orders ready to go. But the livestream is another story.

Either way. It will be interesting to see what happens.
