The plot wasn’t left open ended. They resolved the story they were looking to tell. It was a small-town murder mystery, and the mystery got solved.
As for the new hero, Gunn has said both Guy and John will appear in Man of Tomorrow.
I think it’s weird that this not getting a second season means the story meant nothing. Is media’s only job to set up for a sequel? Was Jaws only good because we eventually got Jaws 3-D?
I wasn’t aware he was going to be in the movie. But the plot felt more like setup for a new hero/anti hero and he didn’t get powers until the very end of the season. Being in a movie makes more sense, without any follow up it feels pointless to me.
I’m not demanding a sequel, but I don’t like shows that are all build up with no payoff. It was a great origin story, but again, pointless if there’s nothing to follow the origin. And I’m sick of Hollywood cancelling shows halfway through the story, or setting something up and not renewing.
Shows like Shogun and Mr Robot that tell a story start to finish with a planned ending are great. Lanterns felt more like a cliff hanger. The small town murder mystery was just the beginning, and kind of boring on it’s own.
I have to disagree. There’s any number of adventure stories where the “conclusion” is that the immediate conflict is resolved and the characters go off to continue their lives in a changed state. Lanterns wasn’t perfect, and I know it was smaller in scope than some GL fans were hoping, but…
Rushville was saved
A manhunter was unconvered and dealt with
Hal’s murder was solved
Hal’s legacy as a heroic but tragic figure is established for the people who matter
John got his powers on his own terms, climbing out from under the thumb of his mom and the Guardians.
He is now physically and emotionally equipped to function as Earth’s Green Lantern. At the end, it’s almost literally “Second star to the right, and straight on til morning.” While it certainly seems like we will see some of them, we don’t have to experience every single challenge he’s ever going to face, even the ones introduced in season 1, for his origin to have been a meaningful and self-contained story.
There’s a second Manhunter that they revealed right at the end and didn’t kill, John finally got his powers but it’s doing it on his own terms which sets him up to be an anti hero, and he made a new oath right at the end that definitely sounded like he fucked up the phrasing and is now in service to the lantern itself. The guardians were really dodgy, and Sinestro is just chillin through the portal still. It was all cliffhanger.
