The show was good, but if it doesn’t get a second season what’s the point? Plot was left open ended and introduced a new hero. If they don’t do anything with that, the show has zero re-watch value and meant nothing.

The plot wasn’t left open ended. They resolved the story they were looking to tell. It was a small-town murder mystery, and the mystery got solved.

As for the new hero, Gunn has said both Guy and John will appear in Man of Tomorrow.

I think it’s weird that this not getting a second season means the story meant nothing. Is media’s only job to set up for a sequel? Was Jaws only good because we eventually got Jaws 3-D?

I wasn’t aware he was going to be in the movie. But the plot felt more like setup for a new hero/anti hero and he didn’t get powers until the very end of the season. Being in a movie makes more sense, without any follow up it feels pointless to me.

I’m not demanding a sequel, but I don’t like shows that are all build up with no payoff. It was a great origin story, but again, pointless if there’s nothing to follow the origin. And I’m sick of Hollywood cancelling shows halfway through the story, or setting something up and not renewing.

Shows like Shogun and Mr Robot that tell a story start to finish with a planned ending are great. Lanterns felt more like a cliff hanger. The small town murder mystery was just the beginning, and kind of boring on it’s own.

I have to disagree. There’s any number of adventure stories where the “conclusion” is that the immediate conflict is resolved and the characters go off to continue their lives in a changed state. Lanterns wasn’t perfect, and I know it was smaller in scope than some GL fans were hoping, but…

          • Rushville was saved
          • A manhunter was unconvered and dealt with
          • Hal’s murder was solved
          • Hal’s legacy as a heroic but tragic figure is established for the people who matter
          • John got his powers on his own terms, climbing out from under the thumb of his mom and the Guardians.

He is now physically and emotionally equipped to function as Earth’s Green Lantern. At the end, it’s almost literally “Second star to the right, and straight on til morning.” While it certainly seems like we will see some of them, we don’t have to experience every single challenge he’s ever going to face, even the ones introduced in season 1, for his origin to have been a meaningful and self-contained story.

There’s a second Manhunter that they revealed right at the end and didn’t kill, John finally got his powers but it’s doing it on his own terms which sets him up to be an anti hero, and he made a new oath right at the end that definitely sounded like he fucked up the phrasing and is now in service to the lantern itself. The guardians were really dodgy, and Sinestro is just chillin through the portal still. It was all cliffhanger.

I had some issues with season 1

    spoiler

Hey can anyone here explain what Hal went to prison for ten years for? For not acting heroically enough when some alien blasted their town from orbit?

Why does everyone in town hate him so much? He was literally shielding people from the orbital blasts and shit. That just never made sense to me.

Also they just agree to bury Hal with a literal wmd on his finger because John asked nicely? Lol ok

I can see how they were just setting up John Stewart’s backstory for future seasons, but I dunno it just had some odd plot choices.

Apollo gave good answers, but this is what I believe happens for the townsfolk

      Spoiler

Remember how all the hospital equipment was wrapped in plastic? It’s because no one ever got sick. Will Macon was devoted to her because she cured his cancer when he was dying. I’m sure she made other deals around town and keeps everyone healthy. Once the Manhunter was gone, all of those benefits were lost. People could get sick, people could get cancer, people could die again. And for them, the blasts from the Manhunter only happened because of Hal. I think that’s why they really hated him so much and were willing to offer him as a scapegoat for the entire situation. The townsfolk lost their gift because of Hal.

That makes sense I guess. They should have made it more clear. Just some odd storytelling choices imo

I agree, the story should have been a little more clear. To be fair, I like watching the New Rockstars breakdown videos after each episode. It helps having folks who are nerdier than me explain everything.

It was likely reckless endangerment. All the bad guys went boom, so you only have the townsfolk story and Hal’s story. The town hated him, so he was the scapegoat. The Guardians wanted him gone, so they did not lift a finger.

Why does everyone in town hate him so much? He was literally shielding people from the orbital blasts and shit. That just never made sense to me.

The same reason people love Trump.

No one agreed to it. John tricked Guy into stealing it. Guy was worried about being found out.

I must have zoned out during that episode because I don’t remember that at all lol. I remember John telling the Guardians lady that he thinks Hal should be buried with it. Then I remember him digging it up.

John turned the Lantern signal to draw Guy Gardner in. Guy visited John when he was in jail and mentioned that Hal should be buried with his ring. Guy said it’s heavily protected and he’d get in trouble for trying something like that. John guilted Guy and basically made him feel like a scaredy cat. The mental manipulation worked on Guy. The next we see Guy he’s standing in front of the casket and tells John they are even now.

In another multiverse, there’s Hal, alive and well.

There was that throwaway line about

      Tap for spoiler

how Sinestro could use the lantern he made to bring Hal back from the dead…

I really thought there was going to be some kind of Paralax thing. Hal not updating his “Halogram” for like a decade (and it wearing his dad’s jacket while 2016 Hal wore a yellow-tinged jacket…) seemed to suggest to me that Hal was keeping an “uncorrupted” back up, and the guardians decommissioning his ring seemed to indicate a problem with the ring. Plus there was the whole thing about how the opening logo was a yellowish green… I suppose it’s still possible and that John could discover a corruption in the ring. I mean, it’s clear that the yellow dust on that planet is like concentrated fear.

I just want a next season to have more space stuff. I want Kilowag and G’Nort and Mogo. I want more Sinestro!
