I run DietPI on one of my SSDs. SSDs are inside USB adapters connected to USB hub. Recently I started from scratch.

I have tested already:

  • dockerized Navidrome music library with Tempus android APP via Tailscale. It needs some tweaks I guess for losing connection or music streaming stutters though.
  • Moonlight + Sunshine game streaming. Although I have not figured out how to handle problematic wireless bluetooth ps4 connection in RetroArch.

Starting from scratch so I guess I will stick to basics for now

  • SSH
  • dockerized Pi-Hole

Then maybe will gry to play with dockerized

  • Forgejo
  • Nextcloud
  • Obsidian (self-hosting?) abilities
  • Teamspeak and move from there.

Im more interested in development now, less in media server stuff.

Any upgrade recommendations are welcome. I thought about Thin client like wase, but will swe. I still have some empty slots for 2 more ssds ;P

Obsidian doesn’t really have self-hosting as far as I know, even though it is an electron app so it would be trivial for them to do, but it would cut into their revenue stream of obsidian sync. One of the downsides to closed source. The only things related are static website “wiki” generation from the markdown file collection.

    Quartz https://github.com/jackyzha0/quartz

Or people use it for blogging like

    Hugo and Jekyll

Syncthing (or nextcloud/Opencloud) can be used to sync obsidian vaults across devices though.

I would suggest opencloud over nextcloud as it is quite a bit faster and not just a mass of extensions and tends to break a lot less than nextcloud. I stopped using nextcloud because of the amount of times it completely broke on an upgrade while not even having breaking changes (I’m glad I didn’t have end to end encryption)

Nice rebuild. Since you are more interested in development than media, I would reorder that list. Put Forgejo before Nextcloud: it is a single small container, trivially backed up (basically a directory plus a sqlite/postgres DB), and act_runner gives you CI to play with, which is a lot of fun for learning. Nextcloud is the opposite: the heaviest thing on your list and the most common cause of “why is my Pi4 swapping” posts. If what you mainly want is file sync and Obsidian notes, Syncthing plus a git repo (or Obsidian Livesync via CouchDB) covers 90% of it at a fraction of the resources.

Two practical notes for your exact setup, since both SSDs hang off one powered USB hub:

    1. USB storage on the Pi4 shares bandwidth with Ethernet (everything goes through the single USB3 controller). Fine for Navidrome, but expect large Nextcloud uploads to tank your network throughput.
    2. Before installing anything else, set up automated backups of both disks and actually test a restore. With everything on one hub, a hub or PSU glitch can take out both SSDs at once. Even a nightly rsync of the important directories to one of your two empty SSD slots gives you a second copy.

Keep Tailscale for SSH and expose nothing else publicly until Pi-hole and Forgejo are stable.

Obvious recommendation from my side is homeassistant if you are into smart home stuff.

If you go for an upgrade, old micro pcs like the lenovo thinkcenter tiny are good. Not sure if those are what you mean with thinclients. The main advantage of those imo is their x86 processor and enough power and ram to run proxmox and install multiple VMs on there for different stuff while still being quite power efficient overall.

I still have a NAS running like that by passing through my USB HDD to a Truenas VM. My other 2 VMs are one for Homeassistant OS (Using homeassistant just with docker is a bit complicated) and a separate VM just for docker applications.
