Yea… But at the same time, today, it’s impressive theh don’t put a price tag on everything… Want cd rom support? Here’s a 100$ subscription

Absolutely no problem in theory. But when it’s a major company, such minor issues often have to be decided by a board. Reports need to be written, and there are procedures that more often than not can take months, just to be sure hasty decisions aren’t made, and that no single person can be held responsible if something goes wrong.
Everybody needs to have their back clear.

Lol, no. Not at any company. If the board at any major company hears the words “CDROM kernel module” something as gone horrifically wrong.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s super cool that valve can make changes as fast as they do. But there’s no way that kind of decision makes to to the board.

Until you realize that valve engineering team has a mostly flat structure. So even their time to ship can be cut down because there’s not a lot of middle manager

Which only confirms my original comment. It’s cool they can make it so fast, having a flat structure is the reason.
But you would be very unlikely to see something similar from Microsoft or Apple.

I ended up just giving up on Xbox controllers completely, they also have a stick drift problem that Microsoft refuses to fix. Switched to 8bitdo and haven’t looked back. Everything works straight out of the box on Linux and no stick drift.

I’m using an 8bit ultimate 2c. For the price (think I paid 25 for it) it ca’t be beat.

However, I have two xbox controllers. One is about 6 years old and has bt but the other one is the older version that only worked with the dongle. Thankfully neither has stick drift. That’s not a “Microsoft” problem though, it’s simoly because the type of stick they use wears out. The steam deck has the same issue. If you want to fix it, you can just replace them with TMR or Hall Effect sticks.

Regardless of that, it’s a fact that they’re most likely the most popular pc controller, and there already is a way to use them on steam with the dongle. But the driver has to be reinstalled every single time you update. SteamOS has a ticket ablut this going back years and years but they refuse to add support.

EDIT: You don’t need tl constantly reinstall the driver, there’s a decky plugin to add support for the dongle. Link.

I love 8bitdo. I’m like 8 controllers deep though with another ordered. They keep coming out with different colors and I can’t help myself.

I’m sure if you get that in as a stable mainline kernel module, they’ll turn it on.

As someone who tried to get the out of tree drivers to work reliably for years, good luck.

That’s simply false. The driver already exists, and they still refuse to add support. There’s a ticket about it on the SteamOS github page if you don’t believe me. Link.

EDIT: There’s a decky plugin for those (like me) tired of waiting. Link.

OOP wanted to watch some movies on the go which they had on disc. And install an old game.

Though another blocker was that the Frame’s USB port didn’t deliver (enough?) power for the drive. So even with the general support it doesn’t solve their specific problem.

Assuming you mean streaming from Linux, I had issues with it running Steam as a Flatpak (controllers not behaving correctly, streaming not even starting, dongle not pairing, etc).

Now I switched to a standard, non-sandboxed Steam install and everything seems to work fine. You can tell there’s a bit of jank under the hood – like they made it work despite Linux rather than thanks to it – but it does work nicely overall.

Steam Frame is a mini PC that runs SteamOS which is based on Arch (btw). You can run some light games directly on the headset itself.

If you mean streaming from a Linux PC to the headset then I have almost no issues with it. There’s a few stuttering issues likely caused by my poor WiFi since placing the dongle within arm’s reach will make everything butter smooth. I run Fedora so kernel is almost bleeding edge. That might have something to so with it.
