I have no real interest in anime. As far as I can remember, I’ve never clicked on any anime related links on Lemmy, but it seems like every other post I see is about anime, a lot of them have to do with someone or something called Moe. I keep blocking them, but more show up. How do I stop it?
Ask Lemmy is not a support community. Locking.
There’s no algorithm here so clicking on something doesn’t affect what you see afterward.
If you’re browsing “All”, then you’re seeing posts from everywhere. The anime is a large part of that but you can make all of it disappear with a few blocked communities as the content really only shows up in a few of them. Once you’ve put them on your block list, you won’t see any of that content in your “all” feed.
I mean its definitely not just a few. Probably >50 anime/manga/lewd communities. I know because im subscribed to half of em. Would be nice if lemmy got community groups that you can bulk follow/block.
In piefed they are under feeds. It works really well. Hopefully Lemmy can get the same soon?
I wish there was a ‘negative feed’. There’s not enough content to just subscribe to the biking feed, for instance. I either hyperfixate on something or forget about it entirely, so I’m not really able to pace myself to wait 2 weeks for a topic feed to refill.
If I could unsubscribe from all anime character art but keep using /all, that would be perfect.
I want All, but not like All, just like Some, but like, I don’t have to tell anyone what Some is and the Some is listed as All and it automatically updates the Some to be the Some that I want in All today based on my mood without telling anyone.
yes, exactly
(but mostly I just want to unsubscribe from categories)
Is that different from blocking communities?
Not gonna lie thats what I use RSS for. I have a couple for communities that are super interesting that I want a backlog. But yeah I’m almost never on all.
BlueSky apparently has some sort of “curated feeds” that a user can subscribe to, which seemed like a good idea to me. The Threadiverse doesn’t presently have something like that, though.
I’d like to have block, subscribe, and “flag with indicator” functionality for instances, users, posts, and comments.
There’s no algorithm here
Lemmy is full of algorithms…
I think they mean that there are no personally curated algorithms, like what YouTube and other popular Social Media use to cater towards each specific user.
It’s the public algorithm, not the personalized algorithms that are the problem. For example Lemmy.world will show posts with few upvotes at the top on the homepage and not show posts with hundreds of upvotes.
You can switch your default view from “hot” and I highly recommend it.
For my home feed I use “scaled” and for the all feed I use top 12 hours.
Pretending that most people think content curation algorithms are the only kind of algorithm just makes you look like a dick, not smart.
No, you’re an algorithm
There is no feed, it’s: your subscriptions, and everything else. If you stick to your subscriptions, you won’t see what you don’t want.
block the whole ani.social domain. there’s no button for it but you can do it in your profile settings. settings -> Blocks
That’s what I had to do too, I’m not against anime in general but this instance is full of sexualized content.
Thanks for the tip :3
Caveat with this is that blocking entire instances means you’re also blocking users, not just communities, and may miss posts in non-anime communities.
Was there an update I missed? Last I knew blocking instances left the users visible. It only blocked communities and their posts hosted on the instance.
it depends on how blocks work on your instance/client. Piefed will block everything from an instance, lemmy clients will only block posts.
Block the communities not the posters as the posters change.
Communities isn’t enough, there’s a lot of unhinged accounts that constantly make new communities.
You can block entire instances, that’s the only way I got rid of it. Whatever instances keep getting new communities of that shit to spam, just block the whole thing.
there’s hundreds of them, new communities keep being made
And the rest of us have to do that with every community type we don’t like. I for one hate seeing so many redundant news and local city communities.
Why does bumfuck nowhere Ohio need communities in 3 different servers all run by different people not even on those servers?
How do I stop it?

From what I understand, unlike most corporate social media, ActivityPub based software, such as Lemmy, doesn’t have an algorithm. By that I mean that it doesn’t track what your interests are based on what you interact with for the purpose of farming engagement. Basically, you’re seeing a lot of anime stuff because it’s what people are actually posting and not because your corporate overlords are shoving it down your throat.
Lemmy has some sort of algorithm even if it isn’t personalized.
Before I blocked all the Moe communities, I was getting Moe with 1 upvote at the top of lemmy.world’s homepage but no 3dprinting posts. Yet if I went to the 3dprinting community, there would be a new post with a hundred upvotes. It’s that way with many other communities too.
The default sort prioritises posts from within the last few minutes above posts that are hours old with far more votes. If one anime fan posts a handful of things right when another checks their feed, there’ll be anime posts at the top for half an hour or so, as they’ve got the most votes per minute.
I see. So they game the algorithm by spreading their posts out every few minutes so that they are constantly at the top.
It’s not really gaming the algorithm. There’s no karma here, no one buying high-karma accounts for advertising, and no one chasing attention when the maximum attention a Lemmy post gets isn’t very much because there aren’t very many users, so there’s no point trying to artificially boost engagement. People are just posting things when they’re online and not posting things when they’re offline, and there are few enough users that it doesn’t take many to create a pattern, and it sounds like you just happen to check at a similar cadence to a few anime fans, so keep seeing things right after they’ve browsed and upvoted what they like. I just checked the All Communities Hot feed on lemmy.world with no communities blocked, and only see one anime-related post in the first five pages, so they’re clearly not constantly at the top. Considering the demographics that would typically use Lemmy, that’s a really low number.
There are plenty of attention whores on Lemmy. They don’t do it for money. The Moe fan was doing it because they wanted as many people as possible to see their collection of suggestive anime of underage girls. What got me to start blocking everything was a drawing of a young girl with white liquid dripping on her face. Yet the uploader was angry at me for calling them out.
The problem with anime is that they make new communities all the time about the latest thing or so. So you can’t really block communities and expect that to make anime disappear. And as others have said, blocking users also doesn’t help as they also keep changing.
So what’s left? Block entire instances that seem to be mostly anime. That’s somewhere in your settings. Or stick to your subscribed feed. You can change the default feed also in your settings.
And to clear up one misconception: Lemmy has no way of measuring your interest in topics and doesn’t track what links you click. The “everything” feed is just a combination of what everybody on Lemmy posts.
I ended up blocking each new community.
Block users and groups until it gets managable. An “all” feed has loads of all.

You can just export/import your account settings (including your blocklist) when making a new one.
👍🤍
I’ve seen tons of anime but what sports communities are you referring to? The only ones I’ve seen aren’t active at all
Can’t speak for the previous poster, but I’ve blocked a lot of (non-American) football and Formula 1 racing comms.
I used to find exactly that, but I blocked the ani.social instance and its barely any now.
Go in settings, tap Blocks and at the bottom, add a blocked instance: ani.social
Occasionally someone makes an unsavoury community elsewhere, so I block those when they come up - tap through to the community and tap the sidebar and you can tap the Block Community button.
You could try blocking the entire ani.social instance, that should get most of them.
i had the same problem with all these “-moe” communities, and found out piefed has a great solution. from the web ui you can add a filter, and block any community with the word moe in one go rather than playing whack a mole every time a new one pops up or blocking a whole instance full of people
Surely you mean “whack-a-moe?”
The problem is “moe” is part of a lot of Dutch words, so thsi would backfire for me.
Instance blocking doesn’t block the people on that instance, just the communities.
There’s a particularly obnoxious Moe fan that posts on a multitude of separate accounts instances and communities to insure his posts are seen by everyone.
When I expressed my concern that some of his Moe was almost anime child porn because it featured underaged girls in explicit poses, he said it was his right to promote those pictures.
It took several weeks to block every moe community because of him.
Unfortunately, it’s the only way to stop it. Every time you see one, click the community and block it.
BET you it’s the same guy I ran into, as I described here:
https://lemmy.world/comment/26545844
Edit:
kiri@ani.social(I have them tagged asanime paedo).
Only browse all to find new communities, browse subscribed instead. Block communities and posters.
I had the same problem but with tankies. Blocking Lemmy.ml fixed the problem.
