I saw a stat that blew my mind. New York is known for its gridlock traffic, but stats show only about 20% of the population regularly drives. The others walk, bike, or ride in taxis, buses, and subways. Imagine if those options didn’t exist.

I don’t like it when stats like this are lumped together incorrectly. It just makes the stat meaningless.

A taxi is a vehicle that is on the road and contributes to the gridlock so shouldn’t be lumped in with the other options that actually contribute to reducing the gridlock.

how’s the train (amtrak?) from NJ to NYC? AFAIK the majority of NJ goes to NYC to work, or is it also upstate newyorkers? Are they commuting in and then going home at lunchtime for Albany style steamed hams?

Disagree. I get the story but… My townie dad and friends have always driven into the city. Even after commuting home from high school or work and going back into the city afterward.

I got a lift from an off duty police officer in Greece. I held on to my backpack like it was an already inflated airbag. Not that it would have made any difference on those slopes.

North Africa is a bit wild and slightly terrifying. For pure terror Honduras takes the blue ribbon.

          India is nuts as well.

Honduras has the added spice of being very mountainous around the major population zones. Most major roads on the edge of a cliff or very steep hill. So you get the “this traffic is nuts” combined with “oh fuck that’s a long ways down.” Frequent mud/rock slides along the routes add a bit more spice as well.

I’m still amazed that the concept of Autobahn is still allowed in Europe. It would be like having a market where people sell rotten meat without any consequence.

But I love the Germans. They invented techno music, hacking activism (CCC), and many other weird stuff.

You are legally required to drive at a speed that is ‘safe’/ befitting of the traffic situation, at all times. If you crash above 130 km/h you automatically get partial fault because you evidently drove too fast.

Maybe that explains it a little

It’s called being responsible. Also the roads are built for it. Lanes are about 1/3 wider than they are in the US because they’re not going for “just one more lane bro”. They’re immaculately maintained. Curves are smooth and sloped. On and off ramps are once every two miles or so, so you don’t have traffic constantly merging or exiting and the “no restrictions” parts are only once you get out of the city.

Immaculately maintained is just not true. There is chronic shortage of money for maintenance, with a 5 billion shortage until 2029.

At least all the stretches I drove with no restrictions were that way, granted can’t say the same for sections in cities or with limits.

The autobahn is mostly kept around due to lobbying. There have been repeated attempts to introduce a maximum speed (130 km/h), the last one failed because “paying for that many signs would be too expensive” iirc.

But its also quite a bit safer than you might think. They’re very good/well built roads, most people actually stick to the recommended 130, and (and I think this might be the largest factor) German driver’s ed is very good (and hideously expensive).

so which of the words autobahn, market, rotten, meat or consequence do you not understand? just ask and we will try to help you, but that sentence does not make any sense.

Visited NYC pre-Pedophile-President and I drove around New Jersey to get some Chinese food on a very hungover evening. People drive pretty much the same as here EXCEPT for some reason the person going the opposite direction turning left will just go in front of you like that’s a perfectly normal thing to do. It was baffling but I drive around a crazy downtown core for work, so it was pretty easy to get used to.
