“The idea, broached by U.S. envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff during trips to Moscow and Kyiv in September, would involve selling Russian gas via a U.S. intermediary to circumvent European sanctions—and could create a lucrative opportunity for American investors, people who attended the discussions said.”
A great example of money trying to overrule the will of a majority - the rich trying to overrule the poor.
Lucrative opportunity until those involved get personally sanctioned.
All the more frustrating that Canada arrested that Huawei exec because she didn’t follow US sanctions. Not because it’s any surprise Trump’s admin don’t care about honouring sanctions now and did back then but because Canada went along with it at all when there was no benefit to anyone no matter how it went. All to protect relations that went to shit anyways.
Now the Americans work for the Russians? Wow the world has changed.
“Now”?
If you’re old enough, you may remember when the Russians were always the baddies and most people did not want to be associated with Russia or Russian money.
I mean, Trump isn’t exactly a recent development at this point.
I’d argue this growth predates Trump.
Also fair.
They do understand that it is cheaper to transport gas via pipeline than via LNG shipping? If Russian gas is added to the European gas market it is going to replace LNG. Most of that comes from the US.
It however clearly shows that Europe has to lower fossil fuel consumption quickly and long term.
Germany’s far-right AfD (and some other Russian-Chinese branches in Europe) have been pushing for Russian gas sales to Europe as soon as the sanctions began, but this won’t happen even if the war in Ukraine comes to an end.
Yet another reason for people to vote tomorrow.

Restoring Russian gas is literally a pipe dream. The remaining pipelines all go either through Ukraine or Poland. I highly doubt that either of them would allow Russia to sell gas once again. That leaves only LNG which puts Russia into direct competition with the US.
One of the NordStream pipelines is also still around.
True, a single pipe remains.
That really doesn’t make much sense: The US fossil fuel barons are currently making a killing because they are the ones who are able to ship LNG at inflated war prices to Europe. So why would the Trump administration try to sabotage their own industry? That industry who payed so much to bring Trump into power?
Because those same fossil fuel barons are raising prices in the US as well. Whatever the global price is, US customers need to pay that or they’ll just sell it somewhere else.
Noise is going to be made for a few more days until the midterms so he can be seen to be “working on it”, and then the idea will be permanently shelved after the election is over.
Supply and demand my friend. The issue Russia has is that they sold their gas via pipelines to Europe. Those pipelines do not connect to many other places besides Turkey and they also have few LNG terminals. The pipelines to China are in a different network, so they can not just move the gas to China. Therefore it actually increase the global gas supply, if Europe buys Russian pipeline gas in large quantities again. More supply means lower global prices.
