I hear you. Even with “fall back”, I will go to sleep at the new time, but will wake up an hour before my alarm, effectively loosing an hour of sleep every night. I’m a mess after a week until my body adjusts again.

Same when going on vacation to a place around the equator. I live in Europe so peak summer the sun doesn’t set until eleven. Then when you travel to the tropics. Sunsets “Damn it’s already that late, i haven’t had dinner yet” looks at watch “WTF it’s still six o’clock”

But if we stayed in daylight saving time, in January the sun wouldn’t rise until like 9 am in some places.

Maybe if we just stayed in standard time all year round, the shortening days wouldn’t be so jarring to people because it would happen gradually instead of having a sudden fall back of an hour in autumn.

Or we stay in daylight saving time all year round and just accept the dark mornings.

Or the people who really don’t like shorter days in winter can just move to the equator.

In lots of places, that would mean that sunlight would be exclusive to oligarchs. The rest of us would almost never get home from work in time. I get that CEOs want early light and early darkness: we usually accept overtime when there’s no hope of catching any sunlight, unlike late light and late dark where they have to put overtime on days with bad weather.

Exactly, I do stuff after work. In the morning I just go to an office that has electric lighting.

Of course there are jobs that don’t take place in an office, but having worked one of those, in my case we already just worked daylight hours, not a 9-5.

Where I live it’s cold and dark at 7 in the winter even with standard time. All it means is the the sun starts to blind my on the way to work after the time change, which doesn’t really help. And I hate coming home in the dark so much more.

If you want to wake up an hour earlier, you can just do that. We don’t need to fuck with the clocks.

DST is ridiculous. The sun should be near its zenith at noon, not at 1.

Yeah, this is my conclusion as well. It literally does not matter what the time is; we can choose to start school/work after sunrise like sane people.

Might as well fall back one more time, leaving an entire generation with an extra hour of sleep that is never taken away again.

That’s the crux of the problem though, isn’t it? We don’t do that. We let psychopaths who enjoy waking up before the sun decide when everything else starts and, big surprise, they chose early as fuck.

The US House has passed a resolution to make DST permanent, so the folks who want permanent DST in the US might get their wish. But, I’m telling you, people are going to complain when their kids are having to walk to school in the pitch dark in the middle of winter.

They could follow the recommendations of the pediatrician’s group (I forgot the name) and start school at a reasonable hour so that growing kids can get enough sleep.

My province switched to permanent DST this year, so we’re experiencing it for the first time and it’s… not that bad 🤷

I’m in Vancouver where it’s already cloudy, and some kids were already heading to school an hour early for various extracurriculars

IMO if kids going to school in the dark is really a problem, then it should be fixed by adjusting when school starts and ends rather than changing the clock for every single person. I like having more sunlight in the afternoon when I can make use of it, compared to in the morning when it’s used up by transit / getting ready for work and school.

However I wouldn’t mind it too much if we had switched to permanent standard time either. I’m just glad that we don’t have to change anymore.

Its nice to have sun light at the end of a slave wage shift. Schools and most jobs could start later. Most studies show humans do better when there is sunlight, because its what we had for millions of years to guide us.

Schools and most jobs could start later.

Well if we’re willing to change school and work schedules, why not have the slave wage shift start even earlier so that there’s even more sunlight hours during your free time? If you started your shift at midnight, you’d be coming home right about the time the sun’s coming up. Seriously. If the goal is to have as much of the winter sunlight hours line up with people’s after work time, that’d be about the best way to do it.

Day and night don’t follow our clocks. The sun shines when the sun shines, days get shorter in the winter the further you are from the equator and we just have to live and work around that.

They always try to keep the summer time, and everyone is happy until winter, when people get so upset at waking before dawn they inevitably return to the daylight savings system

It does have to be permanent winter time, this has been studied and has clear results

My sleep has been amazing since the switch. Go to bed tired because it feels like I stayed up an extra hour, wake up an hour early because my biological clock thinks it’s time to get up and then get to chill and take my time getting ready in the morning. It’s nice. The spring one on the other hand…

The EU were well on the way to agreeing to stop this nonsense, then it got delayed, Brexit happened (so whether it would still have happened in the UK is anybody’s guess), and COVID hit. I don’t think it has been mentioned since.

it has nothing to do with brexit.

the eu somehow unilaterally decided to do it and stop the time switching - that has been agreed on. and now the only thing that is left is for 27 countries to agree on which time to keep… 😂

which will never happen and i am glad for that. i like these long summer evenings where you can do stuff and that is what would probably be canceled.

doing it otherwise and keeping the summer time for all year would mean that the daylight in winter would start at 9am, contrary to today’s 8am, which would be terrible for out biorhytms (or so do biologists specializing in this area say)

Western Australia got rid of daylight savings years ago and it’s literally gone unnoticed. Only reason I remember it’s a thing is the memes, or if I have to do something involving eastern states and they’re either 2 or 3 hours again depending on time of year.

Idk, i think 12h of daylight every day would be nice…we hit something like 7h of daylight where I live during winter. And we don’t even have snow or anything to make it nice, we just have a gray wet depressing mess of winters.
