Alberta’s run by oil companies. Pretty sure Danielle Smith, before becoming premier, was basically an oil industry lobbyist.

It surprises absolutely no one that Alberta has regulation that impedes/hinders solar and renewable energy projects. It’s a really weird example to try and use to demonstrate the ‘broad’ existence of nimby regulations. Sorta like highlighting North Korea, and saying human rights abuses are global based on that sample.

So Alberta can look at a solar farm that generates clean power, supports pollinators, and keeps land productive, then decide the real threat is that someone might have to see it? This isn’t environmental protection. It’s bureaucratic sabotage dressed up as concern for the countryside.

        It’s not X, it’s Y.

Tons of people on the internet write in this style. I did, frequently, well before ChatGPT.

That’s where LLMs got the habit from, then inbred it into each other. Dare I say it may have bled back into human writing too.

Personally, I’d want to block “is this or is this not AI” threads on Lemmy. I’m sick of people thinking they’re human LLM/diffusion detectors when that is (outside of obvious cases, or logit watermarks) physically impossible.

I’m not being condescending at all and your comment makes perfect sense in isolation. It’s stupid to call out a single construction (or punctuation mark) as you’re interpreting me as having done. I’m just assuming you’re smart enough to see a pattern when you see it repeated often enough; so sorry, I guess?

Anyone can read the seed comments on your posts and come to the same conclusion. This isn’t picking a sequence of unlikely noun-adjective pairs, it’s a consistent pattern across all your first comments. You’re obviously (?) a person and can think and write for yourself, so why are you having LLM do the work for you?

Someone mentioned you have a side hustle selling social media AI, so you might want to disclose any bias you have about forbidding people from calling you out for using Gen AI.

Let’s just say we have house roofs or car roofs. Those are free real estate for solar. However, here, if you want to set solar up as a private person to make revenue you get fucked over by electricy company giving you only lump prices for the energy AND politics give you the whole beraucracy nightmare because you could make 1.72€ revenue that are not taxed!!!11

I feel like it’s simply not wanted to let small people participate in any way.

I doubt anywhere in the world has an electrical utility designed to support paying for users to produce solar. Folks seem to think it should be 1 to 1 on what you produce should equal whatever you would have paid, ignoring all the other maintenance, redundancy and load balancing the utility has to provide.

Between solar and something like localized battery storage to handle usage surges we could probably handle it better now, but I don’t think anyone is building that kind of system.

They think that because of how the bills are charged. Every electric utility fee on my bill is per usage. If they had a base ‘admin / maintenance’ cost based development size / type and then usage fee on top I think people would not think it so much.

my utility does bill admin fees monthly. I pay them about $8 per month to be on the grid even though my net usage is negative.

Car roofs don’t work well. The Ioniq 5 had them as an option. It could only charge a few miles daily, and doing the math it would never pay for itself over the lifetime of the car.

Roof panels on cars also tend to get damaged from rocks and pebbles just like windscreens, and when a solar panel gets a bad section it affects the whole panel.

Parking lot canopies is a better placement than on the cars. Not only do they produce electricity they, also keep the cars shaded so less energy is used on air conditioning.

Anyway for small scale personal use, I think the balcony panels are the best option in the places where it’s legal and possible.

That’s really going to depend on the sun angle.

In Northern Europe, no it probably won’t work well.

In Australia - it’d be a godsend - even if it wasn’t adding range it could be used to keep the car cool even when off. Getting into a 50-60c car isn’t fun (and is pretty common during the summer here)

Field solar is mostly to improve micro-climate in hot summers. Plants close their pores if temperature is too hot, air too dry. They stop growing then and focus on survival, which can also negatively affect the produce otherwise. For example, european vegetables + fruits have short shelf life this year, aside from less of it. Solar panels hold back humidity and give some shade, while also cooling a bit.

There’s plenty of crops that actually grow just fine in or even prefer shade, especially those grown for their leaves (arugula, spinach, mustard, lettuce, kale, bok choy…) Rhubarb, currants, gooseberries, pawpaw all are found naturally in shaded areas (under trees for example) or on the edge of tree lines.

Strawberry farmers in particular should all be looking into installing solar panels over their crops.
