The fire that broke out on a bridge across the Teltow canal in the south-west of the capital early on Saturday could deprive up to 35,000 homes and 1,900 businesses of electricity – and in many cases heat – until 8 January, the grid company Stromnetz Berlin said.

As state security authorities opened an investigation into the cause of the blaze near the Lichterfelde heat and power station that damaged several high-voltage cables, the Vulkangruppe (Volcano Group) said.

The area affected by the power cut includes many elderly care homes and hospitals as well as high-rise buildings with residents who are reliant on elevators that are now out of order. Berlin received moderate snowfall at the weekend and night-time temperatures plunged well below freezing.

A previous arson attack attributed to the far left in September knocked out electricity for 60 hours in the south-east of the city in what was reportedly Berlin’s longest power cut since the second world war.

    Creating blackouts or any other form of violence never ‘makes sense’ in residential districts.

    And what does ‘left-wing’ and ‘right-wing’ even mean, at least in the extreme forms? What difference does it make when violence rules? Violence, imho, doesn’t make sense. It may take some time until we eventually know for sure who is responsible, maybe indeed some weirdos hired by malign foreign states.

    But as you mention the ‘left-wing perspective:’ Here on Lemmy is a larger group that calls itself left-wing, but in their communities they literally hail aggression and cheering violence against people, including violence against Ukraine by Russian invaders. Just read their comms.

    As we know from other posts, there has been a study last year about this.

      That doesn’t mean that there aren’t very clear patterns of violence that are different for violence perpetrated by people following far-left or far-right ideologies. You wouldn’t see a far-left burning down a shelter for asylum seekers for example.

      It’s also funny how like even “mildly critical” articles - independent of content and journalistic quality- about Ruzz or CCP have like a continuous standard minimum of 10% downvotes. Like, always. So, yes there certainly seems to be some spill-over.

      Ideologacally, imo, certain issues have also been mentally and psychologically tied by certain narratives; like Electric Vehicles, Palestina, Colonialism, Climate Change, racism to being “pro-China and Ruzzia”, but also anti-EU.

      This “mental contruct” is imo completely bogus, but one has to admit that the propaganda narrative has worked out very well for them. They really have spread their information virus to certain groups.

      Oligarchs like in Ruzzia, CCP or Arabian Petro States only care for more power. They don’t care about human lives, climate, environment or human rights at all. They are not even democratic so how can they remotely be linked to proper socialism?

      And yes, there is still alot of criticism that politicians in Europe and memberstates deserve. But hey, they are trying and are manoeuvring between a Western and Eastern threat, and an enemy within.
