One of them was me. I only used facebook for marketplace. Went to renew my listings one day and it asked me for age ID verification to relist a Pink Floyd boxed set. I then instantly deleted my account.

lol. I guess the balance is: how much liability will we dissipate with age verification legislation vs. How many marginal users will we lose, vs how normalised will ID become?

ID circumvention will be mainstream, and by extension so will tech services that don’t try and comply with laws. Identity theft fear alone will drive this even among the “I have nothing to hide” crowd. The early adopters will be the under 18 crowd who will universally as a rule need ID circumvention to even use services, and won’t forget how

Vs how much liability they pick up when they get sued for data breaches resulting in notnjust usernames and passwords but driver’s licences and passports

I’m still mad how they gutted Craigslist just to scam even harder.

I genuinely think the constant spam posts on craigslist is literally a meta op.

I call bullshit on those numbers.

And if they are true, I bet it is not a lot of people in western countries. Maybe Southeast Asia and Africa, where they have convinced people that Facebook is the Internet. But most westerners have stopped that shit, and I imagine those are the more valuable numbers for advertisers. So of course they will lie to inflate their numbers to scam advertisers.

I use FB marketplace a lot, and that shit is plagued with a constant flood of bots. It’s gotta be a significant percentage of their userbase at this point.

I always said this about Twitter before I left when Idiot Musk took over.

I had like 12+ accounts. Hell, I still occasionally come across something and like “ok, I forgot I registered that funny Twitter handle.”

I have Facebook because it’s the only way to reach some family, but I rarely visit. Thanks for reminding me to uninstall the app.

Tell everyone you are done with facebook and let grandma know where she has to go to see grandkid pics. She’ll figure it out, she wants those pics.

This is how we break our families of facebook.

Delete the account. If they reach out another way, they matter. If not, you won’t miss them. That’s how I saw it, at least.

definitely get rid of the app! The account is one thing if you log in from a desktop terminal, but the app is where the real money comes for them IIRC.
