I actually just asked Sonic the Hedgehog and he said it’s not rude to mock and expose a dangerous cult, and I trust Sonic as an authority on all things pertaining to speed running.

It’s a rite of passage lol

We recently got a wave of new Scientology canvassers up here in Scotland complete with a shady windowless office of theirs downtown and I’m patiently waiting for the day someone hucks a brick through it.

    .

I would do it, but still got a couple more years til I get indef leave to remain lol

Rude? To a religion that physically and/or emotionally traps people? Traps them in those specific labyrinthine buildings shown in the speedruns? In out of the way rooms occasionally shown in these speedruns? No, not rude.

My only worry is that Scientology will pull itself out of its own ass and twist the narrative to use this as advertising. Or that some kid will do this alone and never return.

It’s doubtful any kind of increased attention on Scientology will benefit the cult. Too much is already known about them for anyone to take them seriously. In the past, they relied on the public’s lack of knowledge of their inner workings to recruit new members. Today, a quick google will bring up Xenu, Sea Org, harassment campaigns, slavery, the Miscaviges, and South Park. Scientology hasn’t faired well in the Information Age.

Too much is already known about them for anyone to take them seriously.

        Not true, unfortunately.

I was on a bus downtown last week, and they set up a giant red tent labeled

        FREE STRESS TEST

And these little old ladies out of town behind me were immediately talking about it. “Oh my, is it a mental health thing? Maybe that’s useful.”

I hate getting into strangers business, but I forced myself to turn around and say loud enough so everyone on the bus would overhear “No, it’s not a ‘mental health’ thing. It’s a cult. Don’t go down there.”

People underestimate how many susceptible people with no knowledge on the dangers of it still exist. All of them ripe for the picking, as far as they’re concerned. Don’t just ignore them when you see it, throw their flyers back at them, cuss them out, tell them to be ashamed, make a scene. People around you need to clue into what this shit is. Don’t allow them to normalize it.

You’d think conservative values would lapse in the same way, but they have only been invigorated in the minds of current day youth. Sense and reason can be completely overtaken by emotion. Particularly against an “aggrieved” party like these slimy fucks.

sure, it won’t help them recruit, but it will help them hold their existing members. when they have evidence of the “persecution” they face it makes it easier for them to discredit the negative info online.

i know for certain that this is at least the Mormon playbook.

It took Jews 3000 years to commit a genocide. Laughing at them is only step 1. They only become a respectable religion once they commit their own genocide.

        Lemmy users are so one-dimensional.

Those “out of control” people are using religion because it’s a powerful tool. They are not “cultists”, odds are they don’t even believe in it. Blame the killer, not the knife.

That’s very different. Bullets are made for killing, it’s their sole purpose.

There are tons of good religious people. Look throughout history and everyone was religious to a certain extent, so are most old people today (depending on where you live ofc, but in rural Quebec I don’t know anyone above 65 that’s not religious). Are you saying all these people are evil, instead of, say, the Pope who called the crusades?

And religion is made to repress and control masses. This evil people are just using religion exactly for what it is designed for: to mind control groups in order to exploit them. If they can use religion even if they personally don’t believe in it, it is even worse.

Scientologists are shit, and they DO destroy lives, but at least they didn’t hijack the US government to age-gate the internet and funnel tax dollars directly into unconditional support for Israel.

So yes, at least in the case of Christians, “most religious people are out of control cultists” or at least “most religious people belong to organizations that directly feed out of control cultists” is accurate enough to be fair.

I’m neither religious nor spiritual myself and I’m not trying to defend any religion.

My point is that treating religious people as an outgroup is deeply problematic as you’re denying one of the basic behavioral patterns in humanity and in yourself.

Cultists generally get mad when called a culstist, especially when you point out that the only difference between a cult and a religion is size and age.

The cult of Christianity has poisoned the world with its mythos, and is worse off for it.

Cults don’t necessarily work like we expect them to
