I’m of an age where i just don’t GAF anymore. I’ll be as polite as I’d expect someone to be with me, but go much beyond that & I’ll be like “welp, I gotta go - TTYL.”

Same here … I think it’s an age thing. I used to be intimidated by older people who talked too long … not intimidated by aggression or anything, just intimidated out of respect … I was taught to always give time to your Elders, give them space and let them talk because they give wisdom and knowledge. But of course, more than half the time, it’s just old person either talking to amuse themselves, or just talking just to talk with no rhyme or reason.

But once you get past a certain age … most of everyone around you is becoming younger than you and anyone older is talking less and if they are talking, they seldom want to talk to you. So anyone who does talk to you and especially if they want to talk too long or too much, you just don’t give a shit anymore and there are no more cultural rules or taboos, so you can freely cut down the length of the interaction, be polite, say you gotta go and leave. And honestly, it feels great to leave those kinds of long winded empty conversations because it feels like you just gained an hour of your day back.

Lean in and give them a hug. You will instantly be their best friend and it will shut them up. Stopping the feedback loop of negativity can be good for them too. Like, let people feel listened to and validated, but boundaries.

A ‘man that sucks, but I gotta go … <insert whatever you gotta do>’ will get you out of this about 50 percent of the time.

True. But a relative of mine will follow me around the house and try to restart the conversation (monologue) every time we invite the whole extended family over (twice a year). I cannot leave the house, but I try to find stuff todo, and engage in conversations with others. When he finally gets a hold of me I have to listen to all the “cool” shit he does at work. It’s basically just bragging.

You’ll sit there and listen to my entire rant about the arzhan 1 archaeological site’s spectral cavalcade and how it backs up yet another bonkers unbelievable thing from herodotos’ account of non-greeks, dammit!

And no, i’m not leaving out the context of how horse-pastoralism moved into the region!
