It is quite competent at maths, including cooking up with real proofs of theorems people have been actively searching for for decades.

Ordinary people aren’t put off by AI art, either. My partner’s grandparents had their TV tuned to a stream of Christmas themed ai-generated videos at Christmas. They were not good, no-one had assessed them for quality for sure. No-one but my partner and I thought this was especially worth commenting on.

So it can do something in both domains…

‘Ordinary’ is doing a lot of work here. I can think of a lot of ordinary people I’ve met who hate AI art. Seems more accurate to say that not everyone is put off by it.

Does seem to be a generational element though, with older generations not caring as much. Case in point is one of the pinball places here. The owner’s been an AI art enthusiast for a while, younger folks hate it to the point that they’ll actively avoid the place, the older ‘I was a pinball wizard in the 80s’ crowd don’t seem as bothered.

100%, my older relatives embraced it wholeheartedly while people younger than me seem to have more negative feelings as they’re being told their career prospects are over thanks to AI, regardless of how true this is. You can even see this divide in entertainment, many mainstream youtubers are clearly aware of how much their (predominantly young) audiences hate AI and respond accordingly, and that’s not to say they don’t have ideological issues with it, but I feel like we’d see a lot more indifference if the audience didn’t hate it as much.

Just when I thought I was done with it forever, back to topics in Digital Humanities I go. Surely differences in generational attitudes towards AI art is something someone in a DH department has been diving deep on these days…

Yeah, it’s insane the disconnect between the views of the average lemming and the average person. It’s fine to have different views, but so many people here are deluded into thinking the majority of the populace shares their opinions.

I know my opinion isn’t widely shared. If it was, Donald Trump wouldn’t be in office, and AI would be in a metaphorical trash can.
