Nice news, I am not sure bout the ban tho, I hate X as much as a next guy but if we ban it I feel like those degenerate people would infest other social media services. I would prefer regulating and only ban if X will not comply (which it probably will not tbh but still worth trying in my opinion). But it’s also interested what could be new X if it gets banned? Threads is not ready I feel, it doesn’t has many X features, maybe bluesky but time will tell

Mastodon could do it; it would be in the interests of UK government (and other European governments) to embrace the Fediverse as a “public service social media”. They could set up publicly run and maintained servers for the good of all citizens.

When the internet started it was shaped massively by Universities and public organisations, and in the UK things like JANET (the Joint Academic Network) really pushed it in the UK before it became mainstream, and continues to this day to underpin the education sectors internet infrastructure.

We’ve had nothing to help shape social media; but are well used to Public Servuce TV and Radia. The UK government and other public organisations have the scale to embrace the fediverse and help it grow by being a clear route to find public information updates, even if they are also choose to duplicate that information out onto other services like Threads / Bluesky or bigger platforms like TikTok and Facebook.

It’s a real opportunity for governments to collaborate with open source projects in the name of digital sovereignty and independence from the US tech giants.

Those people would just join the fediverse and we’d have Lemmy.ml, dbzer0 etc. communities which you could either ban or join, depending on preference.

I think X is better as it’s more centralized and it keeps all the nutcases there. I don’t want to start concerning myself with what servers to ban and whatnot on fediverse.

I don’t really think those people would join fediverse tbh mostly because lack of algorithm driven feed, Twitter or X is for now center for new trends going in the world will it be political or is influencer drama, compared to X fedivese lacks many things that is needed to support needs of X users, also take in consideration that X is basically main social media many influencers and politicians and so on use to post updates and such and many people are using X for just that. As far as I know there is no verification checkmark on fediverse so it’s gonna be hard to get influencers here (which I don’t really even want to tbh), so they will probably move to bluesky or threads

To be honest I think it also lacks engagement controversial enough to make it relevant in their eyes.
