NAFTA may have helped Canada grow economically but only if we stayed under the thumb of the US and jumped every hoop when asked. Trump just took it up a notch with USMCA and now wants Canada to be completely subservient. It may hurt in the short term but it is time for the US to become ‘just another country’ and for Canada to continue to pivot away from them in every way.

During his first term, Trump negotiated and heavily praised the USMCA as a superior alternative to the “disastrous” North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which he said had offshored US jobs, among other problems.

It was a slightly tweaked NAFTA with a new name, but he wanted votes from people who were opposed to NAFTA, so we got a lot of political theater.

Kind of like corporate DEI, I think NAFTA was generally bad (well I don’t think DEI was bad but it was generally half-assed), but now it’s been forced on Mexican & Canadian economies removing it will be worse.
