Posting this because I hadn’t heard about it before and I’m probably not the only Mullvad user here, so might as well.
The party claims to stand for a “class-conscious populism” which according to party leader Markus Allard takes inspiration from marxist ideology and unites the “productive” classes of society against the “Transferiat”, with the “Transferiat” being a term coined by Allard to describe the classes of society that lives off transfers that are a net negative for society such as those who, despite having an ability to work, live off social welfare benefits, as well as those who work “made-up services”[…]
The party differs from modern day left-wing parties by seeing the working class as co-dependent with people working in enterprise and business and instead sees the classes that “live off transfers”, as specified, as a large economic net-negative and an obstacle for a functional society.
Their ideology is nonsense fake-marxist revisionism to redirect anger at capitalism and turn it against immigrants and people who need social welfare (though they do back some generally left oriented social policies, their main thing appears to be racism)
Even if you’re comfortable with funding this, it still begs the question of just how trustworthy Mullvad actually is.
I guess this still beats any of the dozens of Israeli VPNs that definitely spy on you, but it’s not great

This really does suck. In all honesty, I don’t feel safe using a VPN that doesn’t accept cash as a payment method. Everything digital is too traceable, crypto included. Far as I’m aware no other VPN provider accepts it.

If you just wanna watch porno at work and prefer anonymity, ivpn is a cost effective alternative that can be used in the same way as mullvad if you’re careful and know what you’re doing.
If you just wanna download files and are not Italian then air is a good cheap port forwarding vpn.

letsVPN has been crap recently, I’m on HK esim for now, but I heard Mullvad was a good provider that works in China. Besides Astrill (pricey) what would any sinobears recommend as an alternative?
What you need is not technically a VPN but a proxy service, commonly known as an “airport”. The difference between a VPN and an airport is mostly technical, all you need to know is that the focus is different: VPNs just hide the contents of your traffic from your ISP, but don’t hide the fact that you’re using a VPN. Airports use different protocols (Shadowsocks, VLESS, Trojan, etc.) focused on hiding the fact that you’re using a proxy in the first place.
Most airports don’t have their own client apps so they work with generic clients, the most common of which is Clash in its various forms (the core clash-kernel implementation is open source software, most GUI apps based on it are also FOSS but not all of them are). If you need help picking a version of Clash for a specific platform lmk. Usually once you sign up to an airport you get a private URL which you paste into Clash to create a configuration and you’re ready to go.
Regarding specific providers the landscape changes all the time and I’m not very up to date. Last time I was in China I used one called Nexitally (dot com) which is still active and was quite good, but it was a couple years ago and I don’t know if it’s still reliable now. Anyway if you search stuff like “best clash airports 2026” you should find lists with a bunch of options.
As a heads up, airports are quite a bit more expensive than normal VPNs and usually have traffic caps (15-20USD/month for 500GB would be a normal price, for reference). Also, their websites generally don’t look like VPNs, they will market themselves as “network accelerators” or some other buzzword. They have to keep a lower profile than normal VPNs so they won’t directly tell you “we help you scale the wall”, you need a bit of experience to figure out what service they’re actually providing if you don’t already know. Also remember to download Clash and set up the airport while you’re still on your HK esim or outside the mainland, their websites might not be reachable from inside the wall.

I Run AmneziaVPN server on a VPS. I’m not a Linux person and even then the setup was extremely easy, a matter of downloading an installer, putting in the server login and IP, and it gets auto configured. It costs me about 5€/month, my VPS is in Spain.
Interesting. So this is something you need a server for I’m guessing, but you can rent one from other places? And it obscures your traffic? Is it still obvious you’re using one, like with VPN’s?
VPS stands for Virtual Private Server. You essentially rent a CPU core, a little bit of RAM and hard drive, and the bandwidth you need. Then you I have Linux installed, and you install your VPN server there.
Depending on the protocol you’re using for VPN, it’s more or less obvious that you’re using one. Most VPN protocols simply encrypt your traffic without pretending not to, so sniffing your traffic will easily say you’re using VPN but won’t be able to tell what’s in your traffic. There are however obfuscation tools and protocols for this. Source: my GF is living in Russia and Roskomnadzor blocks VPNs if you don’t use a protocol which pretends to be normal traffic by disguising itself.
AmneziaVPN is an example of a protocol that pretends to be normal traffic, an even more advanced one is XRAY + Reality. You can read about that somewhere else, I’m not nerdy enough to explain it well

It’s something I do, yes. Hosting my VPS on a rather small provider made it so that it’s much, much, much less prone to being blocked by websites than when I used NordVPN in the past, but I can’t compare it to a “hidden” VPN because I don’t even know what you mean

I know some VPNs have some feature they advertise that hides the fact that you’re connecting from a VPN for sites that don’t allow VPN traffic. Haven’t done too much messing around with them, but wondered how it compared.
I’m not sure how they may be advertising that, the traffic that reaches the website is not VPN encrypted because the tunnel is from your PC to their servers, not from their servers to the websites’. Most websites banning VPN traffic do it by IP banning, I’m sure it’s easy enough for them to purchase a list of VPN server IPs.
As for obscuring the fact that you’re using a VPN, that’s definitely a thing though. There are protocols such as AmneziaVPN or tools such as XRAY+Reality which allow you to pretend you’re not using a VPN. OpenVPN for example is secure in the sense that your traffic is encrypted and the contents are safe, but sniffing your traffic would easily determine that you’re using OpenVPN. These other alternatives, besides encrypting your traffic, pretend that you’re connecting to a website of your choice, so from the outside the traffic looks normal rather than encrypted to most who may be sniffing. Source: my GF lives in Russia and I run an AmneziaVPN server for her in a VPS of my choice, it was the only way I found of overcoming the banning of stuff like YouTube or Telegram by Roskomnadzor.
I’m not an informatics nerd so you may want to take everything I said with a grain of salt, except the fact that both AmneziaVPN and Xray+Reality are widely used tools to overcome VPN banning and I’ve successfully used them to access e.g. YouTube from both Russia and China using my VPS hosted VPN.
How do you do that anonymously? Also a lot of them like Hetzner want your ID and have some strict rules about allowed traffic
I don’t know how to do that anonymously, I don’t have any online paying methods that are anonymous. I guess there may be countries where you can anonymously rent a VPS paying with crypto, but I never looked into or tried that, may be worth considering.
