Do they remember smells? How long does their memory last? What are their first memories?
They’re like a toddler in almost every way, they have the same vocabulary understanding too. In my experience, they have long memories, especially if it’s negative or traumatic for them. It takes a while for an abused animal to come around with safe people because they remember.
Just a warning from our experience with an abused great Dane:
Some dogs, once they realize you aren’t going to beat them for being bad, will decide the rules don’t apply to them anymore. It’s really hard to correct bad behaviors at that point.
True that

Since smell is so important to dogs I’d assume so.
I have aphantasia, so I don’t remember visuals at all. I do remember sensations, sounds, and smells quite keenly though.
Every time I hear about aphantasia it blows my mind.
I don’t remember much more than the visuals, so I can’t imagine not having them at all.
Well, equally so I can’t imagine what it’s like to picture things. I’ve a friend who can visualise things like they’re physically there and that’s just bananas to me.
It can suck sometimes too, though. Me and my partner are long distance, and though they’ve visited I don’t remember what they look like.
I obviously have a general idea of their looks, I’m not blind and I can recall an overall description, but when it comes to details it’s more the feelings associated with certain things that stuck with me. Like the sensation of the particularly curly hair around the temple. Or how they smell.
yes. long time (apparent if you have seen a dog see someone they have not seen in years). Individual dependent just like with humans.
My dogs first memory seems to “car bad” but I don’t know why. He barks and will literally spin in his leash and collar on a walk if he sees one drive by.
On /c/FuckCars, no one knows you’re a dog.
I asked him if he wanted to post there and he said was bark and jumped at me… I think that’s a yes
Are you are it isn’t excitement?
Many dogs were bread to chase
Sometimes I see his excitement. Like when I grab his leash. The funny thing is he is smart enough to know he needs a leash. One time he pooped, I bent down to pick it like a good pet owner, a car drove by and he pulled causing me to fall and drop his leash. He then ignored car, picked leash with his mouth, and brought it to me as I’m laying on the ground. The car stopped and asked if I was alright and they saw what happened. I slowly got up and and said I was fine, sore for a few days but I recovered.
