Just blocked lemmy.ml from my Lemmy account, and I swear to god it’s one of the best things I’ve ever done on this platform. My homepage feels actually clean now.

For the past few months I’d been seeing a lot of tankie posting and pretty much far-left propaganda on my feed. It got tiring enough that I finally checked my blocked-user list, and realized pretty much everyone I’d blocked was from lemmy.ml. So I just blocked the whole instance instead.

Saying this as someone who considers themselves a leftist: I used to think Lemmy itself was an echo chamber. Turns out lemmy.ml was the problem the entire time. Probably the reason I tolerated it for so long is that I agreed with a lot of what they posted, but like an oversaturated meme, I’d had enough. Browsing the platform was starting to feel way too tiring instead of fun, which defeats the point of being here in the first place.

The breaking point was seeing some dude post a “meme” implying North Korea and China are basically communist utopias and that the West sucks. I mean, the West does suck, but come on - you’re saying North Korea is the ideal the West should strive for? What the hell…

It sure would be swell if people could, at the very least, elevate to a 2d view of politics. Hearing the majority of quadrants II, III, and IV all referred to all “far-left” is confusing at best.

That’s because adding a 2nd axis does almost nothing to mitigate how insanely reductionist political spectrums are. People are not that simple x1,000,000,000.

Nothing wrong with building models with limitations but one cannot test the political compass to measure how reliable it is at predicting future results.

As such I genuinely think the frustration you’re experiencing is because the people who relate to it the most tend to view people over simplistically, usually because they can’t empathize with any human experience that isn’t theirs. Aka conservatives.

Like me as a progressive can empathize with my conservative family that’s never been exposed to trans people and only fed anti-trans bs. But flip the script and they cannot fathom why I don’t go to church or vote conservative like a good christian. I know because they’ve told me.

To be fair, the quadrant system is also bullshit. Authority isn’t a sliding scale, it depends on which class controls the authority of the state and is therefore either the beneficiary of or victim of authority.

    Amen brother.

There are a few instances where like 90% of the problematic content and users come from. Blocking them makes the fediverse FAR more enjoyable and pleasant. And reduces the harassment and violent content by 90%

Sane leftists need to shut out the insane ones. Those folks dont’ care about politics in any actionable way. All they care about is feeling superior to everyone else based on their theoretical beliefs and their weird cult of worship they have created with facts don’t matter and alternative history is the truth.

I’m currently debating with myself whether to block sh.itjust.works next, because it seems to be becoming another hotbed of bad actors who are here to be purely negative and hostile to other users and push extremist content, and if you counter point them they just harass the shit out of you and follow you around across various communities.

in fact a lot of folks i blocked on other instances are now posting from that instance under the same username. seems like some folks just keep swapping instances once enough folks have blocked them on another instance for their harassment and horrible posts.

YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND HE HAD TO MURDER MILLIONS SO THAT 10s OF MILLIONS COULD BE MISERABLE AND LIVE IN A CORRUPT OLIGARCHY REGIME, WHERE THE QUALITY OF LIFE WAS DECADES BEHIND THE WEST.

and don’t forget how glorious and prefect and FREE life is in China and North Korea.

What’s so hard about that? You are jumping to conclusions because my account is registered on lemmy.ml because at the time it seemed like a good place to start.

        Stalin wasn’t the greatest benefactor.

Now you say it about Trump, Netanyahu and Putin.

Experimenting with blocklists is fine and how you find your comfort zone on Lemmy.

I once made an experiment in which I blocked lemmy.world - not out of spite, but to just see what the rest of Lemmy has to offer. Turns out, quite much!

Still, too many niche communities are hosted on .world, so here I am again.

I tend to agree that the majority of communities are hosted on 3 major instance’s its a concern that makes it difficult remove any of the 3 or 4 mega instances regardless of policies or practices.

I see many saying just boycott or block .world but, a decent source of communities im in are listed there. I know it’s against the spirit of fediverse but I don’t see that changing any time soon.

Lemmy.world is clearly run by a bunch of incompetent, at least slightly bigoted, idiots and it really shows in the overall quality of the community that results.

I think the most toxic thing about Lemmy.World is a pervasive belief that stricter rules and more automation will make everything better and they are just so painfully, blatantly wrong about it that it hurts.

It’s an inherent problem with having both users and communities on the same instances, and just how humans tend to operate in general in that we automatically gravitate to others and clump together.

I think it was @rglullis@communick.news who was saying that in an ideal world there would be two types of instances, one for users and one that only served as hosting space for communities. That way you could block or defederate user groups without losing access to entire communities.

Of course, we’re way past the point where reorganization into a structure like that is feasible. But it’s interesting to think about.

I am still optimistic about it. It will be impossible to make one huge push in this direction, but slowly people will come to realize that this is the most sensible approach. For example, I’ve noticed that !nba@nba.space started to get more activity because !nba@lemmy.world is considering moving out of LW, but are spending a lot of time debating over a lateral move. If only they had accepted when I first invited them to join as mods from the topic-specific instance, this would’ve never been an issue.

I tried that in the past, removed a lot of fun communities that had the problem i’ve described in the post - turns out my subscritptions feed became a lot emptier and the problem only spread to the ones i stayed on.

I just moved to lemmy.zip from dbzer0 and before that, world, mainly because I want to be the one blocking, I don’t want my instance to block for me. I must not be subscribed to the right places, because I just don’t see a whole lot of CCP/RUS apologia? I’m pretty good at passing over shit I know I won’t agree with though, so it might just not be registering.

I have never noticed any problem with lemmy.ml.

Block all the low-quality meme/image content if lemmy feels tiring. Stop consuming garbage.
