I agree modern USA variant is Ding Dong Ditch, however it couldn’t have always been that as the game predates doorbells. What was dinging and what was dongin for those early trailblazers?
Bells are quite old. Maybe people sometimes targeted houses that used them instead of door knockers or just knocking and called it Ding Dong Ditch back then too! probably not tho.
About 3 months ago a teenage girl, like 13 or so, strolled up to the door, pushed the button, and bolted. Like no attempt to be stealthy, wasn’t even moving speedy until the press. My cam records 24/7 so it’s not like it only records once pressed, the camera screen lights up when you approach, Home Assistant greets you at the same time. You know that it knows that you are present, painfully clearly.
I dunno if getting older is accelerating it, but damn kids these days are dumb as hell. At least scope out places without cams…

I remember as a kid we were playing hide and seek over at a friend’s house. Someone got all upset because he said one of us went into his garage and shut the garage door. None of us would have done that, but I do wish that guy would have had a camera so he would have had evidence that no one was in his garage or doing anything on his property.
I have a feeling a family member shut it or he just forgot and when he saw a kid not even in his yard running around he thought he still had it open and blamed it on “hooligans.”
Camera would have been exceptionally rare back then though… That had to be 97?
Nah, to reach the button you have to trigger both the screen and the greeting, and even if you are quick there’s still enough time to pause and think. I can also see my closest neighbor’s door, which would be the closest/fastest alternative if you needed something but were startled; they went the other direction, the shortest route to break line of sight, with no hesitation after the press.
Obviously it’s Ding Dong Dash.
