A lot of it has to do with incentives. If people know they have overdosed and its a crime, they’ll be reluctant to call for help or emergency services. Congratulations, you’ve lost a taxpayer and worker you spent a ton of time and resources educating and getting grown up.

Suicide is not illegal in most places.
Also: what are they gonna do if you succeed in the crime? Execute you?
Well if you fail, like failing to rob a place they can still lock you up for years making you unemployable in all but a few minimum wage jobs wishing you succeeded.
That’s only going to incentivize a person to not fail at committing suicide. And the policy/laws around this should be focused on assisting suicidal people in improving their mental health and becoming less suicidal.
I know, but reality sucks because more money can be made by punishing you for failing then by helping you.

That’s what I don’t get if you go to the health department they give our free condoms and such. But you can’t get free Narcan to help a family member from dieing which is messed up.
Depending on country you can get narcan, not sure if for free but it’s a thing or at least used to be
Yep, locality-dependent, but it happens. My state will give Narcan to anyone who is willing to take a class on recognizing and treating an overdose.
You can get free narcan. It’s just that it’s usually done ona state level here in the US, and isn’t always easy
Where are you experiencing no free narcan? At my college campus there are open cupboards all over the place full of them that say “carry narcan, just in case”. I have one in my car and one at my workstation, just in case, even tho I don’t know anyone that uses right now. I asked my mom to put one in her car and she said “I’ve already got two, just in case.”
I’ll grab a few next week and send them to you. Seriously. DM me an address. I’ve taken a bunch and given them to people just to have, just in case. The school/state/someone keeps restocking them.

same reason not wearing a helmet on a motorbike is illegal : yeah, you die when your brains splatter all over the pavement, but the person that has to scoop your brains off the road doesn’t want to do that.
