There are 450,000 infections each year in the US including 240,000 cases that do not respond to regular treatment
Cases of the highly contagious and often drug-resistant bacterial disease, Shigella, are rising across the U.S., with dozens of doctors issuing warnings.
Shigella infections, known as shigellosis, can cause bloody diarrhea, dysentery, fever, vomiting, dehydration, stomach cramps, seizures, blood infections and in rare cases, death.
Experts have long been aware that drug-resistant strains of Shigella disproportionately cause severe illness in children under the age of 5. But doctors from health departments across the U.S. announced in April that white men are now the most susceptible to infections from drug resistant Shigella.
That findings could change the way hospitals respond to the pervasive illness, the doctors noted in a federal report.
And here I had always thought the “D” was short for “disease”.
why is this being called sexually transmitted. stds generally are exclusively gotten from sexual contact or its way harder to get other ways. that is not so with this disease. saying its an std kinda minimizes it.
The bacteria also spreads during sexual contact that involves the anus, putting men who have sex with men at a higher risk of infection.
In the U.K., the spread of the disease through sex grew 15 percent faster annually from 2015-2020 compared to spread through other methods of transmission, according to a July study.
A few simple steps can prevent illness. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds before you eat, engage in sexual activity or change a diaper, according to the clinic. Avoiding sexual contact for at least two weeks with anyone who has diarrhea or who recently recovered from diarrhea is also advised.
It’s a warning not to have sex with people with diarrhea. Also, there are various interesting things about the disease when sexually transmitted vs not, for instance a study linked by the article theorizes that being sexually transmitted is why the disease is becoming resistant to medication:
It has been speculated that the acquisition of azithromycin resistance for Shigella moving into sexual transmission networks was driven by bystander resistance.9,10,12 This phenomenon refers to the evolution of antimicrobial resistance in an off-target organism following treatment for a co-infection. In the case of shigellosis-affected MSM in the UK, this was assumed to be driven by the overlapping epidemic of gonorrhoea, for which there is an intensive screen and treat programme.9,12 Our results are consistent with this hypothesis.
men who have sex with men
My friend just say “people who have anal sex”. You’re excluding straight people who do butt stuff, and your excluding transfemme tops who do butt stuff. Saying “people who have anal sex” includes those groups as well as those who eat ass but otherwise don’t put things in butts.
It’s not just gay and bisexual men who put things in butts. Not even close.
thats not the only way it spread. fecal matter on the hands of someone preparing food can. which is much more scary. fecal matter on hands is unfortunately a not uncommon thing. I was so happy during covid when so many restaurants started getting and mandating the light plastic gloves. wash hands signs are just not adequate.
Yes you are right, but the sexual transmission aspect has reasons to mention it. One thing I’m unclear about is how frequently this disease spreads sexually vs by other means, I couldn’t find this mentioned in the article and if the study mentioned it I can’t parse the academic jargon well enough to see it.
my problem is calling it an std, because it will run rampant with out any sexual activity happening in a community. A monestary could have an outbreak. To me it minimizes it by looking at one way it can transmit when its likely not even the most common. Food borne pathogens are a much bigger deal.
I guess that’s fair, but the wording of the title to me doesn’t imply that it can’t spread other ways. I wish we did know whether it’s the most common though because that is very relevant to whether the headline is misleading.
there is no way sexual contact is more common with this type of pathogen than someone preparing food without washing their hands. that is such a common spread vector I just can’t possibly see it.
In one of the studies cited by this one it’s implied that the number is around 30% (in Australia):
In total, 545 Shigella isolates (364 Shigella sonnei and 181 Shigella flexneri) isolates underwent WGS, representing 42.9% (545/1269) of shigellosis notifications in Victoria over the study period. The median age was 35 years (interquartile range 27–48; range 0–83), with a male to female ratio of 2.4:1.0 (Supplementary Figure 1). Over one-third of cases (36.0%; 196/545) were associated with overseas travel as a primary risk factor, and 176 (32.3%) cases identified MSM as a primary risk factor.
And 60% for the specific strain associated with sexual transmission and higher antibiotic resistance:
In contrast to the travel-associated lineages, S. sonnei cases in BP3 were significantly associated with MSM, with 61% (97/159) of males in this lineage reporting MSM as a primary risk factor (Figure 1; Table 1).
Although I’m also reading that it differs a lot by region because of different hygiene/public health standards so the numbers might be different elsewhere.
Just a few weeks ago I read that people in the US are getting diarrhea from salad. I thought it was food related.
/s
Someone just tossed their salad
Stop licking people’s ass you idiots.
Sexually transmitted diarrhea is primarily caused by Shigella bacteria, which spread through fecal-oral contact during sex (especially oral-anal contact).
You can’t make me
The sexually transmitted part is kinda just homophobia. The study they cite specifically sought to compare Men who have Sex with Men and everyone else, and came to the conclusion that the sexually transmitted shigella is far more likely among MSM than any other group and is an endemic sexually transmissible illness among MSM, and blames PrEP and PEP (almost exclusive to the gay and bisexual male community) along with higher treatment rates for other sexually transmitted illnesses like gonorrhea among MSM for the rise in resistant sexually transmitted shigella. They also concluded that sexually transmitted shigellosis among MSM is responsible for introducing more infections to the general public.

Background Shigellosis, caused by Shigella bacteria, is a leading cause of diarrhoeal disease globally. In the last two decades, Shigella circulation in high-income countries has expanded from being a sporadic travel-associated illness to also being an endemic sexually transmissible illness among men who have sex with men (MSM). We aimed to characterise the nature and drivers of this multimodal Shigella transmission in a high-income setting.
And they made a LOT of assumptions to get the results. Basically if they didn’t have travel information on a sample, they assumed that it was a non-travel risk. And if they didn’t have sex information on a sample, they assumed it was female.
Results S sonnei sequences (n=3514) were classified into three demographic groups based on their potential association with STN (appendix 2 tab 2). Isolates collected on or after March 1, 2020 (85 [2·3%] of 3642) and with missing data on sex (26 [0·7%] of 3557) or age (ten [0·3%] of 3531) were excluded. We assumed that cases with missing or unknown travel data (1795 [51·1%] of 3514) did not have recent high-risk travel10 and that cases with unknown information on sex were female (16 [0·5%] of 3514). We identified 1197 (34·1%) isolates as being from pMSM, 1048 (29·8%) as travel, and 1269 (36·1%) from non-pMSM (949 [75%] female and 320 [25%] male; table; figure 1A; appendix 1 p 8). The urban population centres of London and Manchester had higher proportions of pMSM cases than less populated regions (0·44 [95% CI 0·41–0·46] vs 0·27 [0·25–0·29], Pearson’s χ2 test p<0·0001; figure 1B). Antimicrobial resistance against any one of the clinically relevant ciprofloxacin, azithromycin, and ceftriaxone antimicrobials, was highest among pMSM (69·4%, 831 of 1197) compared with antimicrobial resistance among non-pMSM (39·6%, 502 of 1269) and travel cases (48·9%, 512 of 1048; figure 1C; appendix 1 p 9; appendix 2 tab 2).
However, we also found that the intensified transmission among pMSM scaled not only with population size but was also attributable to a greater number of introductions into the population (ie, increased transmission chains). This greater importation of Shigella into sexual transmission networks might reflect increased network density (ie, greater number of sexual contacts among gay, bisexual, and other MSM24) or enhanced biological susceptibility of pMSM to Shigella, possibly associated with HIV (or both).5
In the coming years, it is likely that the spread of sexually transmissible drug-resistant shigellosis will increase. Particularly with the widespread availability of pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis regimens in sexual health practice, including HIV and doxycycline pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis, facilitating sexual behaviours and antimicrobial selection pressure, which can lead to increases in transmission and antimicrobial resistance emergence.18,32,33 It is also likely that our findings of rapid spatial spread and intensified transmission of Shigella among pMSM are occurring for the array of other enteric illnesses that are otherwise known to transmit sexually among pMSM, which might also be increasing.34
i always felt STD studies are often targeted against gay men the most, while almost sugar coating the statistics of Hetorosexual couples.
How do you figure?
Username checks out… :D
What could you possibly know about asses? Do Terminators even have asses?
Do Terminators even have asses?
NEVER! Ass is my official house of worship 🙏
You’re not my supervisor
or even eating a girl out who had diarrhea.
Fecal -oral transmission on cruise ships doesn’t happen from eating ass. No one washes their hands any more, that’s sooo 2020.
What the fuck are you talking about?
Hand washing and rubbing alcohol became more common in 2020. I know several friends that still use alcohol before eating, after handling money, or taking a bus
Trump: No! Everybody should kiss my ass! My beautiful great covfefe!
can cause bloody diarrhea, dysentery, fever, vomiting, dehydration, stomach cramps, seizures, blood infections and in rare cases, death.
Especially when they’re doing that…
It’s being primarily spread by gay men, if you’d bother to read the posted link.
Off topic, but this made me remember about the guy charging $50k an ass to teach Trump’s administration how to not wipe after pooping…
Dr. Sean O’Mara, an emergency medicine physician-turned health optimization expert who is followed by RFK Jr. and JD Vance, developed what he calls a “living carnivore diet,” which focuses on grass-fed meat and fermented foods while cutting out sugar, alcohol, and processed foods.
According to O’Mara, the benefits go beyond general health improvements. “When you start eating healthy, you don’t need toilet paper,” O’Mara told the New York Times Magazine. “Animals in the wild have no residual stool on their anus.” It comes after RFK Jr. was slammed by doctors after chugging ‘dangerous’ milk with a controversial influencer.
O’Mara, who has followed the plan for about a decade, said the diet has completely changed his own digestion. “I could have a bowel movement behind a sheet at a dinner party in the corner of the room,” he said, “and nobody would know.”

Well shit. Wait, I mean—

Hurry! When and where is the next Republican convention? You guys need to help out! LOL… Not LOL. Just damn! Why does “god” keep doubling down on good people?
