Why do refrigerators need to be hooked up to WiFi?
so they can infect the raw milk with 5G coronavirus radio waves
Centralized energy management, performance issue, maintenance flagging, etc. There’s a lot of useful reasons for a big bank of commercial refrigeration to have a variety of remote monitoring and controls.
Damn. Get out of here with your reasonable comment. I want to be old cranky and made (kidding)
is there a reason they can’t have this on an airgapped network per-location? i guess it might be nice to have it connect to a central office, but is it a huge issue to have one employee call in the occasional management stuff over the phone? does corporate really need the ability to change the temperature of every fridge on every site? wouldn’t you generally want the on-location employees to change out the product first? or am i talking out my ass about all of this?
They’re not going to have a datacenter on each store.
a single pc from 2009 could manage a lot of refrigerators and freezers unless they need way more stuff than i can imagine
Dynamic pricing.
Have you ever considered that food logistics companies really want data about what’s in your fridge really bad? How heartless to deny them
Insurance fraud
20-30 years ago, people saying this was possible were seen as the equivalent of the drunk “Jesus is near!” sign guy
Was it possible 20-30 years ago?
no, IOT as a major thing hinged on both reliable internet (took off during the dot com boom) and miniaturization of computers, both power and antennas. i don’t think smart fridges really were a thing in the mid 2000s?
As a household appliance or somwthing a grocery chain would have? No, but i’m sure importsnt science stuff that required child storage had something similar hooked up.
I used to think Shadowrun having literally everything from a soycaf pot to a semi truck connected to the wireless matrix was silly but here we are
For what its worth, commercial refrigeration units with wifi actually does make some reasonable sense for managing stock and having a quick response to issues or even preventing them outright through diagnostic data.
Of course, you also want some competent IT infrastructure, but i guess that got the budget cuts for “what do they do anyway?” Or something similar.
“We’ve never had to deal with this issue, just cut it”
WHERE’S MY DRAGONS THEN
At long last we have managed to ruin the future like in all that dystopian fiction you all love so much.
We don’t even get any of the cool stuff like sweet chrome, magic coming back, or amerikkka balkanizing after an uprising of indigenous peoples. We just megacorps, plague, environmental disaster, everything connected to the matrix while it spies on everyone, corporate militaries, urban decay, etc etc
I eagerly await wifi hackable grenades like in Watchdogs.
I take my cyber-security super seriously. That’s why I’m invested in a fridge with the latest, most impenetrable hacking protection. It’s called being an old-ass refrigerator from the 90s that never even conceived of being online, because why the hell do refrigerators need to be online?!
I was thinking to buy a fridge that had my biggest threat vectors pre-installed
Reason number ∞ for why appliances should never connect to the internet
Hacked and used for torrent seeding? Bitcoin mining wouldn’t make sense, right?
Residential proxy maybe. Like all the Korean TVs
Bro, why does your fridge need an Internet connection? That chicken isn’t going to send any emails
I hate this cyberpunk dystopia we live in
Can’t even get find a guy who will sell me military-grade weapons or give me robot arms
The attack — which has reportedly seen units set to continuously defrost at 50 degrees Celsius
why the hell would your fridge need to be able to get up to 50 degrees celsius to defrost. Ice quickly melts at like 5 degrees C!!
I’d rather have hotter Soviet fridges alas we’re in the bad timeline.
Refrigeration loops can run both ways
50°C ???
Hackers remotely cook your eggs using your refrigerator.
Presumably it’s just a strong heating element located near where ice is most likely to build up and cause problems, which in normal use would only be active for a few minutes to clear away the ice with minimal disruption to the rest of the freezer. With this it’s been locked on so it quickly heats up the rest of the freezer too. But that’s my guess based on seeing the deicing cycle in a normal consumer fridge, I don’t know how a commercial freezer would actually do this.
it doubles as a sauna
At that temperature, it’s a defrost, defog, and de-frog all in one. What in the fuck.
Well it is about French fridges too so there might be something to the defrog mode.
Sacré bleu!
Schadenfreude
