I know social media has been around for a bit now. But as technology progresses, you begin to wonder how far facial recognition and things like that will go. Especially if you are a parent.
I will always say, you should never post your child’s photos online.

Are you sure social media is growing? Pretty sure I live in a world where there is a lot of governmental and societal backlash to it. Age verification laws, addiction lawsuits, etc.

But I have considered online communication to be a societal good ever since I first discovered it, and have no intention to change my mind on it (which is why I am here). So the answer to that is also no.

Why is it always about protecting the kids from technology?

I’m way more concerned about the future of the elderly having technology than the children.

Old people out of touch with technology are dangerous. In 20 years that’ll be you and me and we are going to lose touch and we are going to do dangerous shit. How do we stop ourselves from doing that?

When the kids today get old, they will become more in touch with the technology. Because, kids grow up with it now. As they get older they will have some knowledge of it. The old people now grew up with things like typewriters. Not iPads and fast computers with the kids today. Unless the technology is so insane that they cannot comprehend it. The kids today will adapt. And I was more concerned about the online bullying from strangers and creeps finding your kid’s photos online.

Current old people grew up with the technology of their time: cars and television. Yet they’re the worst drivers and watch televised propaganda all day long.

If we want to save the children from social media, we first need to accept that it’s a problem for everybody, not just kids, since we also can’t handle it safely by ourselves and especially not when we get older.

Social Media is somewhat like the discovery of birth control pills. At first it opened for some freedom, but Social Media is now in the AIDS phase. I don’t think it is possible to make a fool proof legal restriction for neither kids or old people, but we can teach and encourage a cultural change for safe practices.

Their old cars and nob televisions are nothing compared to the new tech of today that kids use. That is why I say the kids today will adapt and it won’t be a problem when they get older. But, it will all be robots in charge probably anyway, if you are talking about further on.

            “what’s a computer”

Most of these ipad kids are just as illiterate as old people who don’t understand how to switch apps on an ipad. Knowing how to use Snapchat isn’t a skill, they don’t know how how to mount a drive, they are just as susceptible to propaganda and tomorrow’s advanced technology won’t just make sense to them when they’re older.

Well yea, technically anything that computes is a computer. But the children today are still forced to use fast computer desktops/laptops at school that the old people didn’t when they were growing up. I am talking about basic tasks that an 80 year old can’t figure out to do today that a 5 year old can figure out on a device. And yes, I’ve asked the teachers. A lot of kids can’t even read at an alarming older age. And don’t get me started on evil snapchat.

Yes, alot of gen alpha people want to be influencers, its quite sad how some of them are seeing that as a goal, plus the usage of AI for doing hw is only going to hurt them more.

I mean, back in the day people wanted to become movie stars, singer and whatever. It’s not much different and the chances are about equally low.

no, I fear for my child’s future because of the data harvesting that happens through social media and if she has to register with her govt id to use said social media

I led by example. No non-anonymous social media for me, and my kids followed my example. It wasn’t even a discussion.

Doesn’t seem to have harmed them at all; they’ve got lots of friends and lots of Signal chat groups. And if you look for them online by name, you get a very curated and focused set of results, many of which are fakes.
