Quite terrible to have all that wealth in the hands of so few. We should distribute that more evenly to raise the quality of living for more.
Big talk for someone who can’t get the funding for their insane spending anymore.
It’s quite terrible for Sam Altman to have a head, and yet.
I have a combined somewhere around 512GiB DRAM. I am glad to know it pisses Altmann Off.
To answers the obvious: Homelab.
I’ve got at least 256 in sticks lying around. Maybe another 128 or so in SBCs and laptops with soldered ram.

aka your savings for retirement.
It will be worth its weight in gold or in steel, depends how the markets go.
Thankfully, OpenAI will barely survive 2026, and will die n 2027. We shouldn’t have to hear too much more about him.
I have previously posted about having a set of 20cl rum bottles, each bottle being dedicated to when I no longer have to live on the same planet as particular bastards that do their best to ruin everything they touch.
I recently bought another set of 20cl rum bottles, and I am thinking of dedicating them to AI companies crashing and burning…
But I am worried, they may not crash and burn, some other person will just buy them before they die completely…
Oh i like this idea…good excuse to get a decent whisky on stock:-)
This is my current setup:

I like it, however I’ve taken the opposite strategy and simply drink to cope with their existence in the present.

I don’t like having too many open bottles at once. Shame distilling even just for personal consumption is illegal here as I would love to make some of my own spirits to go with my mead. Easier storage for spirits too tbh.
It’s not wine, it doesn’t go off quickly. There’s this concept of the “infinity bottle” where you make your own ever-evolving blend of leftovers. It’s usually associated with whiskey but can work well for rums.
What is the Gran Anejo to?
Wait, sorry, I thought you ment the last bottle…
The Gran Anejo is dedicated to Rupert Murdoch, one of the true media ghouls
I haven’t decided yet, so far the best I have thought of is “the bottle of the unknown bad guy”, a bottle reserved for a when someone dies and you draw a sigh of relief.
At this point I think CEOs are just trying to rage bait us
The more we talk about AI the more he stays relevant, the longer he can prop up his stock price.
No it’s the money that keeps them relevant, not us talking about it.
To be clear I’m not demonizing us for talking about it, but that’s his tactic. He says something that keeps him in the news cycle, that keeps him in the minds of investors, which keeps his valuation up, and that’s the money. If he became irrelevant in the news that would mean his valuation was going down, and he’d be losing money - so yes I think him stirring the pot is to keep OpenAI relevant and talked about.
that keeps him in the minds of investors, which keeps his valuation up, and that’s the money.
In the “minds” of investors.
How many of those investors are automated systems at this point? They may literally only be registering that his name was in the news and not even be capable of considering why. But more mentions feeds into the algorithm moving a few more decimal points toward ‘buy’, regardless of context.
“Please revolt. Me and my billionaire friends would like to see how our AI powered MG42s fair against a swarm.”
That’s an interesting choice of firearm.
Its one of the spookiest MGs
Seems on point
No, they’re really that stupid. To the core.
Owning shovels is bad says shovel renting company.
Personally, I think it’s quite terrible that Sam Altman isn’t currently experiencing testicular torsion.
“Please Luigi me” said the man with the imminently punchable face.
Having gone through that myself as a teen,
I agree.
It’s quite terrible for
AICEOs to keep breathingHe can rent ram from me if he thinks it’s so terrible, it’s the best option for those who need compute after all. I’ll rent a VM with 16GB of RAM to him for let’s say $1000 a month. Go ahead Sam, it’s the best utilization after all. For $5,000 a month you can have a part time “spot” instance with a GPU.
Oh but I don’t work like Nvidia, Sam, you get the same terms we do with subscriptions. You miss one payment, one payment doesn’t clear, you’re cut off.
That sounds about fair for how us consumers have been treated.
Missed payments should be a suspension with a fine, plus late fee, plus convenience fee, plus admin fee, plus intrest on the late payment, plus reinstatement fee.
I’ve got 32GB of RAM that sits mostly unused in my main PC. I’ve got another micro PC with 16GB (I think) that hasn’t been on for year. Laptop has only 8GB but that hasn’t been turned on for sic months.
Hoping this makes Sam upset.
Next he’ll be paying off politicians to make it legal for police to come to your door and seize your RAM for ‘national security’. There’ll be a huge right wing media campaign, funded by the taxpayer, under the heading ‘The War Against Home RAM’. People who own their own computers will be labelled ‘terrorists’.
They can pry my RAM from my cold dead hands
Brought to you by the National RAM Association (NRA).
Sounds like Sammy sees what way the winds are blowing, and is scared
Models are getting a lot more efficient, and the billion dollar models are going to have to compete with something basically free to run
Only a moron would think OpenAI was ever turning profitable.
There were two possible ways,
-
Subscription prices rose to a point no one would be interested to pay.
-
Inference got so cheap, that 98% of all use cases could be run by open weight models on local machines
In both situations OpenAi and Anthropic lost.
The bull case has been a bear case since the beginning. Both companies will most likely stay alive, but will eventually have their costs turned down as they’re going to be bought out by some of the mastodonts.
The best possible scenario for either of them, is if a government want a frontier lab and decides to buy one already functioning. Rather than having their universities start from scratch
They die if we use local models.
The second profit condition would be it got so cheap they could make bank on data collection
-
Something that has a fixed up front cost to run*
Otherwise, YES!
Depending on your rig there will still be recurring cost (electricity)
Well, yeah… i was just pointing out that “free” wasn’t exactly accurate
I know, I was adding another thing that made it not free.
Maybe, maybe not. Phones are getting more optimized for AI and have decent RAM, so the on device models may not be great at agentic problem solving, but they’ll probably meet most people’s AI needs
Plus, any reasonable gaming computer or MacBook can run models… Maybe a bit slowly and maybe just the compressed 8gb models, but they can pretty much all do it to some degree
So I think we’ll be in a place where there’s little or no upfront cost after a couple more key advancements

That goes fucking hard. I might get that on a t-shirt.
Is this a “from my cold dead hands” situation?
Because it seems like:
a. AI would respond, “challenge accepted.”
b. AI would also respond, “just like ours.”
Yes. Terrible for him that I can do my own computing without having to rent it from him.
Next in breaking news: local mechanic thinks “it’s quite terrible” for people to repair their own cars at home.
Manufacturers unironically believe this.
Some repair guys do too and I find it really annoying when they are secretive over things.
When I worked in a repair shop if a customer asked I would let them know exactly what I’m doing.
Manufacturers don’t even really want mechanics fixing them. Yes, we put that part that we know breaks in a position that requires disassembling half the engine. We’ll say it’s a 1 hour job. Good luck getting paid grease monkeys- now everyone shut up and buy more cars.
Definitely. If owners had to buy a new car every time it broke down, that would be nearly the manufacturers’ ideal situation. Personally I was as impressed as disgusted by the boldness of deploying features as a subscription. They still sold, so what do I know?
Sam Altman should be hung upside down and forced to subsidize hardware prices for everybody to offset the damage he’s caused.
