Hey everyone!

This originally started as a small personal project. I just wanted something for myself, but somewhere along the way I got a little too invested in it, and things got a bit out of hand.

I’m not a developer by profession, and honestly, this isn’t really the final result I imagined showing people. There are still things I’d love to improve, change, or completely rethink. But I’m at a point in my life where I’m trying to actually finish my projects instead of endlessly working on them.

So here it is.

AI disclosure

This project was built with heavy AI assistance: most of the code was written with an AI coding assistant. I decided what to build, tested it, and use it daily on my own server, but I’m not a professional developer and I can’t guarantee the code meets professional standards. I’d only recommend it for personal use.

What it is

I’ve been working on a fork of openGym, an open-source fitness tracker, mainly adding nutrition tracking and trying to make self-hosting as accessible as possible.

I did my best to make the installation as simple as possible for anyone who wants to host it themselves.

Feedback welcome

This is my first project that I’m actually putting out there for the public, so apologies in advance if some things are a little rough around the edges.

If anyone is interested, feel free to try it out. I’d genuinely love to hear what you think, even if it’s just to tell me something doesn’t work or could be better.

There will probably be more improvements in the future, especially around gamification of nutrition tracking. I’d really like to make that part more fun and motivating.

Thanks

A big thank you to the people behind two open-source projects that made all of this possible:

  • openGym by DuarteSantos8, which is the foundation of this project.
  • wger, whose work and data the nutrition features rely on.

Huge thanks to their developers and contributors for sharing their work with everyone. Projects like these are what make it possible for people like me, who aren’t professional developers, to try building something of their own.

And to anyone currently working on their nutrition, trying to improve their eating habits, or following a diet: I wish you lots of courage and success. I really hope this little project might help some of you, even just a bit.

Anyway, after posting this, I’m going straight to bed because this project has genuinely driven me insane.

Thanks for reading, and take care!___

Did you ever consider giving more then lip service to the projects that “inspired” you? Or did you not think any further than self promotion after your AI built on top of these projects?

I guess those are rhetorical questions, because I know the answer: it was easier not to think at all.

Yeah all the buggy as fuck, AI slop copying every single app is getting really old and boring. Just make something somewhat new or marginally innovative at the very least if 0 work goes into it anyway.

You may want to search for software development good practices and security. Just create it simply with AI might potentially have a lot of security breaches and code that can be replaced for better performance. It is not a good idea leave all the work to a robot.

Fair points, and I want to be upfront: yes, this was built with heavy AI assistance. Also, English isn’t my native language, so sorry if some things come across wrong.

I originally made it just for myself, because I couldn’t find a self-hosted project that combined workout and nutrition tracking. It was never meant to compete with anything or to be presented as professional work. I’m not a developer, and I would never claim skills I don’t have. The goal was simply to fill a gap for my own use, and share it in case it helps someone else.

About security: I did the best I could, but I honestly think it’s only suited for personal use, and I wouldn’t recommend relying on it for anything more serious.

About the word “inspired”: it was badly worded. The nutrition part relies on wger’s work and data, and the whole app is built on openGym. They deserve much more credit than I gave them in my post.

As for the community rules, I sincerely apologize. I rushed things and didn’t take the time to read them properly.

If anything, I hope this very small contribution might give someone the idea to build a similar project, but a much cleaner one. Sorry again, and thanks for the honest feedback.

      No you don’t because:

      1. you wrote that comment with AI
      2. you perfectly know the state of AI in programming and all the issues that can arise

You know we are flooded with such projects and you don’t care.
