In Britain, non-crime hate incidents are classed as cases where one person’s actions are perceived by another to be motivated by hostility or prejudice towards people with a particular characteristic.

    The notoriously bigoted Metropolitan Police, no less. They will decide whether a racist, transphobic or homophobic attack is one of the bad ones where they have to do a bunch of tedious and difficult work, or one of the actually OK ones where they don’t have to bother. If they abuse the system they’ll have to answer to a government that’s desperate to prove it doesn’t like the same people the far right doesn’t like, in the hopes of gaining some votes it will never get.

    I, for one, can see no flaws whatsoever in this system, all of whose players will undoubtedly have the courage, moral integrity and resolve to do the right thing no matter how difficult.
