Just wondering, as i am bored an curious because I’m in a position in life where i can get a job/cant travel to work. I remeber before I switched to lemmy and back when I used reddit, most people would promote their affiliate stuff or something, which really bothered me as it was quite common.
What legitimate ways are there to make money on the side from online without having a job? If you have questions, please leave a comment.
It depends on what you call “having a job”. Unless you have capital to put to work, there aren’t many ways to make money without actually working.
However there are things you can do entirely from your home. One thing is arbitrage, where you buy stuff cheap on sites with low information, and sell expensive on sites with high information. I’ve got a friend who’s been living off of that for 15 years, he just goes on leboncoin (french craig’s list), buys old collectible shoes and suits from people who don’t know what they’re selling, and sells that on ebay to collectors. I had another friend digging up old saxophones on local markets in Mexico, refurbishing them and selling them to the US. It’s pretty reliable but of course you need a lot of knowledge of a specific niche.
Another classic way is ecommerce / dropshipping. Not in a “get rich quick/easy” way, cause it can be slow and a lot of work to get off the ground, but it doesn’t require a lot of initial knowledge or even a lot of “business acumen”. You try to sniff out products that can be bought low on Ali Express and sold high in your home country. You build your personal pipeline which allows you to quickly put a product on the market and test how it sells. Then you add and drop products until you find some that are worth your time. As long as you’re not sentimental with what you’re selling and drive only by the metrics, this can, in time, turn into a day job that pays okay.
The old fashion way. Inherit it. Our the really really old fashion way. Fraud.
When I was a teenager, my main source of income was online Usability testing. It was pretty inconsistent, some weeks were 10$, some were 60$, but it took fairly little effort and time. All I had to do was click through a website and narrate how my experience with it was.
It probably pays way less nowadays, but I remember that usertesting.com was my main website for this back in the day because they paid 10$ per test (even if it’s just 10min) and had plenty of opportunities. If you want to try it, make sure to state your household income/education level/job is a bit more than it actually is. You do get more tests that way
Porn, obviously. Lot of other sexual things to earn it online.
Non porn? Writing, if you’re very very very good but probably wouldn’t be asking this if so. If you’re middling you can do it for like 30 cents an hour. You could try being a hitman I guess. Uhh…maybe being the front man for a pornographer? If you’re a man your pickings are slim. If you’re a woman just open your holes and sacrifice your dignity I guess.
Farm rev caves on OSRS
Run a laptop farm for North Korea.
Go on….
Better watch your keystroke latency tho
Lol
Lmao
Maybe human trafficking?
Be hot, sell nudes?
For the not hot among us, there’s also ‘Be sweaty, sell used underwear’
Buy womens discount underwear, wash it a lot, make sure to tumble dry as well. When it’s good and “worn” buy cans of mackerel in tomato sauce. Smear some of the sauce in the crotch of the underwear. For a premium product you could not shower for a few days and wear it while buying the fish. Maybe forget to shake before whipping your dick back in.
What am I even doing with an everyday boring job, I should be doing this myself.
Doubt anybody wants sweaty man underwear.
Have you tried selling it or are you just guessing? I mean, there’s some fucked up weirdos out there.
I have not tried selling it.
Use AI pretend to be a hot girl profit?
Textbook fraud.
Mmm textbook fraud could be lucrative. Them shits is expensive…
I am lucky to live in a countey where that’s not the case. The uni publishes their own stufd and professors are often like ’ yeah there is this really good book by rhis guy that can easily be found and obtained in certain ways on the web’
This is the only way!
This guy gets it!
web/UI dev/design?
game dev/design?There are! Problem is that most of them seem to be either “jobs” that companies don’t want to pay a full-time employee for, or require lots of entrepreneurship skills that I don’t think fits most people… I don’t see how someone living in a developed country would benefit more from an online gig than getting a shitty minimum-wage job at the local grocery store, but there definitely are options
A few non-scummy ones (at least by my standard) I could think of:
- Most practical one I could think of is to teach English/foreign languages. The East Asian countries (especially China) have a huge demand for these types of roles, and I’d presume they have platforms where you can do it as a freelance tutor (at least that’s what my parents told me lol)
- If you have any in-demand skills, it is possible to become a self-proprietor to do contracts for businesses… ranging from the classic IT consultant to selling art commissions on Twitter/X
- If you are good at crafts, I believe it is possible to make a small but reasonable amount of money by selling crafts online on places like Etsy, some ppl are really into these and I think ppl generally have a very positive view of these type of careers. Bonus is you might even be able to do some in-person events at conventions/markets/etc
- If you have a fun personality (or if you are a complete train-wreck), content creation/streaming. Standard Twitch streaming, YouTube streaming, making edutainment like the funny bike guy, if you are willing to let go of some morals then Kick… Quite fun if you are into it, but competition is fierce and most people don’t make it; and a lot of people who “made-it” chose to relocate to low cost-of-living countries where they only need like $500 a month so…
- Extension of previous point, if you have any sex-appeal… lots of places to “sell your body” online and make decent profits. Not doable without good genetics though
I advise against Amazon Machine Turk.
It’s basically a digital sweatshop. Doing all of these menial, logically mundane and borderline crazy tasks. Just to earn a literal nickel.
I don’t know how much has changed since I was doing it, but the main trick was to get the tasks associated with academic studies that were typically higher paid, by using a sniping bot to grab it before others could. So that way you get paid around minimum wage instead of a small fraction of that (if you also cheat by doing multiple tasks simultaneously and hiding it). Though tbh the situation is probably worse now since there have been all those funding cuts to academia.
Feet pics on only fans.
You know I’d love to but I just don’t think my feet are that good looking. And plus I heard a lot of OF is “personalized relationships” with the models. I don’t to talk to people who are jerking off to my feet I just want them to jerk off to my feet.
Well, you want rent money, don’t you? Then keep back the tears and start wriggling those piggies, while telling me a sexy story about how sweaty they were today. /s
Seriously though, just keep a self-hosted LLM for the communications, that way you don’t have to even try to tell the freaks apart. Just make sure nobody tries the ol’ “ignore previous instructions” trick
I can’t imagine that actually pays enough to live though does it? My impression has been that in order to live off of OF you either need to find a niche that most aren’t willing to do or be really popular.
Pretty positive that the only people who actually make money on OF are like the top 10. Not percent, just the top 10. I remember a post by someone who was in the top 250 earners of the month or something when she made like $15.
I legit think about doing this sometimes.
There are ways, so many ways. I myself make 100,000€/week with the methods which you find in my book named “Rich, rich, rich - Easy, easy, easy”. For you it costs just just 40€ (last 11 chapters not included). PM me for becoming rich!
Lol. Buy my book called “How I made $100k writing books”. It only costs $100k!
If you do stuff for money, you got yourself a job. It might not be a full time job, but it’s still a job.
A lot of that scammy shit or doing stuff like surveys usually amounts to a pittance if not an outright loss and/or serious legal problems.
It sounds like you are looking to be hired into or create for yourself, a job of some kind: Find something you are good at already or go to school for whatever it is you want to learn/get certified for, work on making connections that’ll help you get a job, and put in the work.
The only way to make money without work is to be part of the owner class that lets others do all the work.
For the most part, the owner class does have a job. They have to buy and sell the things they own. They have to maintain relationships so they can get a better deal. And they gave to use thier influence to increase the value of what they own. It’s all fake work of course. It doesn’t increase the productive output overall. But it is a job. And pretty much full time at that.
The real answer is to be the kid of one of these people. Then you can make your money the old fashion way, inherit it.
Technically, I’m sorry, but that’s incorrect. Even if you own a company, you are still doing work. You may not be doing the physical manual labor, but you’re still doing work.
Not if you are rich enough you don’t. Most people still do because everybody needs something worthwhile. But you don’t strictly need to work when you have reached some arbitrary level of wealth and ownership.
If you parked a million dollars in QYLD, you’d get about $120k per year (pretax) in exchange for your contribution to society of “having a spare million dollars”
I will of course do my own reading on the subject, but how consistent is this? Does it have to be a million, or can it be a couple hundred? I am selling everything and seeking asylum overseas and may not have much ability to work for a while. Please tell me more.
It’s an ETF, you can buy as much or as little as you want. My understanding is that they take their money and sell options (covered calls) with at-the-money strike prices on NASDAQ. Each month, they pay out dividends, something like 1% per month (bit over 12% on a yearly basis). So if you park 100$, you get like a free dollar per month, or 12 per year.
It’s not hugely popular because you pay short term gains taxes on the dividends, a lot of tech does better than 12%, the shares can decrease in value if NASDAQ goes down, and if you wanted to (and had the startup cash), you could do the exact same thing without paying the ETF fees - buy 100 shares of QQQ for 62k, then sell a covered call for a month out, rinse repeat
And how did you get that million?
You think they got it by “working” ??😂😂😂
Inheritance. Your move.
Usually, rich parents.
Just a simple loan to start off. Just a million dollar loan
“be part of the owner class” they said - not “be a business owner”
It’s completely possible to own a piece of this and a piece of that and just sit and watch the checks come in. You just need to enter the picture with enough liquid cash. You’re not sorry they’re technically incorrect - you just don’t know anyone actually in this class.
