Like are there people in the world who don’t know who Ariana Grande or The Weekend are?
I beg your pardon, but what is, ‘The Weekend’?
Obviously lmao
This cant be a real question…
Very, I am completely clueless when people ramble on about celebrities.
Of course it is. As a general rule, the older you get the less “famous” people you will know about.
Like are there people in the world who don’t know who Ariana Grande or The Weekend are?
Have you heard of that hostile tribe that lives on an island in the Pacific Ocean or wherever, isolated from the rest of the world? They probably don’t know.
My grandma probably doesn’t know. Most roselle people from other countries than America probably don’t know who they are. They know about the celebrities from their time, when they were young.
I feel like you must be very young and/or naive to ask this question, if it is indeed a genuine question. 😐
Take a few seconds to think about how information works and you’ll have your answer.
yes? I am guessing The Weekend is a band or musician by virtue of you mentioning them alongside Ariana Grande but other than that, I have no clue who they are. I couldn’t even name an Ariana Grande song of the top of my head but I know she was in the Wicked movie. This feels like a very North America /US / Anglosphere defaultism post tbh.
Yes. I grew up that way. In the rural midwest, raised by a single hyper religious mother who probably has some sort of mental thing. She just completely turned herself off from pop culture. I think the latest movie she watched was made in the 60s, and I was born in the nineties. I grew up not knowing any movies, movies stars, music, or anything.
It hurt me deeply because all of my friends would talk about new movies and their favorite actors, and I had to learn how to fake it. They would say did you see so and so and I’d chuckle like I knew who they were talking about.
I remember one birthday asking her for movies, just any popular movies, I didn’t even know what to ask for. She got me three, and I remember the newest made one was Tora Tora Tora! Admittedly a decent film, but I was so hurt by it, made decades before my time. What middle school friend would want to come over and watch it with me?
Only as an adult did I realize it wasn’t anything like age ratings or holding me back for religion, she truly had shut herself off from the world. She wants absolutely nothing to do with the world. When I got into Lord of the rings finally I watched the films, and read the books cover to cover multiple times and loved them. I carried them around school, had every line memorized (and still watch them annually). I wanted so badly to share them with someone, and asked her so many times to watch them with me, but she never once did. Doesn’t even know the plot.
Eventually I just gave up. Christmas a couple years ago I had pirates of the Caribbean on in the background just while cooking and she asked us to turn it off because it was “too scary”. I didn’t know how to respond to it. I just… Turned it off. She then sat playing on her phone while we all just did things quietly.
When I met my now spouse we started watching everything. I watched braveheart and gladiator within the last couple of years. Big film buff now, and love following actors careers and comparing performances. Its a ton of fun!
I’m apathetic towards my mother for a lot of reasons, but I don’t think she fully knows how much she hurt our relationship with it. There’s a lot more, but you have to show an interest in what your children like. She didn’t. If she didn’t understand it or she if it didn’t involve her, she would walk out of the room. Now she wonders why we don’t get together often, or why I don’t talk much to her. I’ve gone to sewing things with her, quilting, other things trying to reach out to her and express interest in what she likes, but it never went reciprocated, so the branch has withered.
She’s always welcome for movie night though.
Thanks for reading
Yes. Neither of them are that famous.
Is it possible to not know who a famous person is?
Good question, evoking inspection of the terms, philosophising about the ideas, … if by definition fame means (in part) known, then if you do not know them, are they famous? And so on. Like its cousin, if a twig snaps in a forest and no one is around to hear it, did it really snap?
Like are there people in the world who don’t know who Ariana Grande or The Weekend are?
Way to crash that good question into the pits on inanity.
Ariana Grande or The Weekend are?
welp, that’s me I have no idea who either of those are. I am going to speculate musicians ?
Yes? It all really depends on the media you consume. Like, I love death metal and some of the most famous death metal bands everyone should know, like Deicide, Dying Fetus or Devourment are still not common knowledge to people that don’t care about metal.

This is maybe related, too
I agree.
Heh, I don’'t know any of these bands and I do listen to metal. I just started listening yesterday to Mastodon because I stumbled on a Youtuber/guitar teacher when looking up some Alex Lifeson videos, and I learned Mastadon is already big for decades. I am ootl mostly these days not consuming media that much anymore.
Is that a new accessibility feature? Listening to Mastodon?
Heheh, my wife asked today, the website? No the band!
The Weekend are days not people
As far as music goes it’s definitely easier to be blissfully ignorant now than it was in the age of MTV and broadcast radio. You get your curated stream of recommendations with no reason to highlight what doesn’t fit there.
I wouldn’t know of Grande had she not been hosting SNL. I don’t know who The Weekend are. I saw a post a while back about Drake’s security being dicks, and I thought Drake’s security was the name of a security company.
I’ll excel at 90’s music trivia if it was on MTV. But now I’m set in my ways and only listen to HYPR demoscene radio. I excel at that niche genre now, too.
The first thing I think of when I think “Ariana Grande” is her role as the castrati kid on SNL. I assume others knew her well before then, but it was that moment that made her famous in my eyes. She came off as hilarious and talented, and I assume others had seen that in her work elsewhere, too.
