I just chanced upon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JuRgiXiKJA and it looks fun.

Ive been having a blast with fan (or open source) made creations for a while. So I was wondering what others play and have fun with.

Pokemon Uranium. Poke-Chernobyl went boom and now there’s a new pokemon type called nuclear. Nuclear variants of regular pokemon tend to go berserk and attack everything in sight, though the pokemon native to nuclear can be controlled.

Five Nights at Raiden’s. Genshin Impact fangame where I guess Hoyo made a kids place for Genshin animatronics. But then the animatronics got corrupted somehow and now want you to die a violent death. It covers Genshin versions of FNAF 1-3.

    Black Mesa because obviously.

The Jedi Masters mod for KOTOR 2. It’s an alternate continuity that considers SWTOR to be non-canon. While too fangamey to be a true KOTOR 3, it puts the remaining plot threads from KOTOR 2 to rest.

I didn’t get very far in it, but JPDE is an alternate continuity of RWBY, with the point of divergence being somewhere near the end of Season 1. The main character choosing to use a whip for combat is dumb as hell though.

SourceWorld. It’s procedurally generated Half Life 2. Fun.

Escape: Yavin 4. It continues off from the Dark Side ending of Jedi Academy. The fun thing about this one is all the different kinds of lightsabers, and you can pick them off dead people to use them yourself! My favorite is the circle one that has blades coming out through the rim.

The Dark Alliance for Jedi Outcast and Academy. It’s a three parter (The Mainframe, The Dark Alliance, The Dark Alliance II: Vengeance). The point of divergence seems to be between Outcast and Academy. Vader is back in action which kinda shocks the cast.

Galactic Legacy for Jedi Academy. In Fate of the Republic, if you play as Windu, he has better situational awareness than the movies this time. There are a few other interesting alternate timelines packed in it as well depending on who wins certain critical fights in the prequels.

Gonna list my favorites that I have loaded onto my Steam Deck:

BetterSADX revamps SADX into a masterpiece. So much so that SADX is now one of my favorite Sonic games because if it.

Sonic SMS Remake series is such a fantastic Mania-like retooling of the Sonic Master System games.

PC Ports like Link’s Awakening DX HD, Tails Adventure, SpaghettiKart (Mario Kart 64), Banjo Remastered, Bomberman 64, ShipOfHarkinian for both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask, Star Fox 64 PC Port, Mario 64 Render96, Animal Crossing, Mystical Ninja Goemon, etc. GAH, SO MANY AWESOME FUCKING PC PORTS, AND SO MANY MORE IN THE PIPELINE.

Fan games like Super Mario and the Rainbow Stars, Sonic Dimensions, etc. are so cool!

Pokémon Infinite Fusion is really great! It’s Pokémon but you can fuse two monsters together to make a new one. A lot of the fusions have custom art! (The other ones are like that old Pokémon fusion creator that pastes one monster’s face over the other one, lol.)

Look for their Discord if you want to download it. All websites that profess to have download links are unofficial and may be malicious.

    Some of my favorites:

    1. https://tangramgames.itch.io/tobu-tobu-girl-deluxe A more GBC classic game that was made somewhat recently. Its deceptively hard but has very tight controls. The music is fantastic and makes me want to get good at the game just to hear a bit more of it.
    2. https://www.wesnoth.org/ I love this game. Im not very good at it, but its super fun and open source. Runs on just about anything. I got it working on a Miyoo mini plus of all things once. Its a strategy hex game.
    3. Pokemon hacks - Theres a metric ton of these. But Ive had fun with Pokemon Unbound recently. It feels like a completely new game.

I’ve been burning through Pokemon ROM hacks lately. Pokemon Odyssey, Lazarus (made by the Emerald Seaglass dev), Emerald Rogue, and the Peach & Lime demo were all good. I’m stuck on the seventh gym in Unbound right now

Seconded for Pokemon Unbound. It’s gym battle gimmicks are so clever and the OST slaps so hard.

Currently playing Animal Crossing New Leaf Welcome Luxury. Balance the economy (buy price == sell price), makes fishing easier etc.

Also like Legend of Zeros Triforce of the Gods. Implements fixes from later versions, restored cut content, and adds some common sense features. Fixes the inventory. Lets you change directions while running. Stuff like that. Based on Zelda 3

I’m not knowledgeable of a lot of them, but had a lot of fun with Quake Brutalist Jam 3, a full conversion quake mod; and the streamer I saw playing them showcased a lot of other Doom / Quake mods spanning many genres.

One that seems very fun is called Dr Robotnik’s Ring Racers. Having little monitoring, it appeared to allow for racers like Senator Armstrong (Nanomachines, Jack!)

ATTENTION SEEKING ALL-CAPS EDIT!!!111 I can’t believe I forgot this one, since it’s one of my favorites. Gyakuten Live is a fangame based off the “Love Live” anime series, with gameplay off Ace Attorney. There are no deathly murders, but the mysteries get quite wrapped up with some complex sequences of events and conflicting motivations. 3 cases out, all for free. Uses original music, a whole lot of spritework, etc.

On the same vein, there’s Occult Crime Police, which might not quite fit the topic since it’s not a fangame of anything - but a wholly original mystery game set in the midwest, playing up a lot of X-Files paranormal mysteries.

Ring racers is soooo much fun! My wife and I played that game. I just wish it worked better on the Steam Deck! I could only get it working on PC and getthing the controllers working was a nightmare! But after a full day of messing with everything it was worth it.

So much polish on the game! https://www.kartkrew.org/

I saw there’s both a Windows and Flatpak release there. I’m curious which works better. If they’re Linux enthusiasts, they may have parity, but there’s also occasions where the Windows build gets more public attention and it’s better to just run that through Proton.

Ive done the flatpack on ubuntu/popos. it works. I havent seen any difference. Havent tried it on a non-linux os. Maybe its better with the controllers?

I may give it another go with proton/other oses thanks!

I’m a huge fan of randomizers. Ocarina of Time is probably my favorite so far, and I’m looking to try Dark Souls 3 and Inscryption soon

Got any action combat game randomizers? Think DmC or Godhand with endless encounter variety?

Borderlands 2 enemy and weapons randomizer… Due the nature of the weapons mechanics it’s just plain dumb sometimes but extremely funny to play… The game tends to crash thou and MP not really working

Seamless co-op is soooo goooood. I never realized how much I wanted a full co-op experience in souls games until that dropped, I ended up playing through the game twice with friends.

Also if we’re doing mods, Elden Ring Convergence and Elden Ring Randomizer are also excellent and worth your time.

Project M and Brawl Minus were a ton of fun!

They’re Smash Brawl fan mods where the game gets totally reworked. The former makes it like Melee, while the latter makes everything ridiculous.

There are others too that I haven’t spent the time with. Melee itself has a mod with a few new chars, and Smash 64 has an extensive remix.
