Early last week, I was at the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library for its first weekend. At the library itself, despite President Donald Trump inserting himself incongruously into the opening ceremonies, I did not see a single person sporting a Trump-branded clothing item.
The town of Medora, North Dakota, itself was, however, a different story. It wasn’t overwhelming. But for someone who lives in an urban center of a blue state, where even in the ruby red rural areas most people have become sufficiently shamed to shut up about their MAGA tendencies, a single errant MAGA cap is a rarity.

Not sure how much Americans are aware they are despised as a collective about electing this twice, doing fuckall about it, blaming everything and everyone else and now pushing it onto the rest of us.
Doing fuck all about it? The people doing something about it you won’t hear about.
You won’t hear about any local resistance in another country. You won’t hear about any local organization in another country. Hell even if someone was planning another assassination attempt, you wouldn’t be hearing about it unless they were really stupid.
The thing that has been most shocking to me about this entire thing is how much foreigners have sided with Trump over the American people. Blaming Americans for Trump completely, even while knowing he is a dictator who ignores the wishes of his own people, and then inviting Trump to their countries to shake hands and make deals. Unbelievable.
I’ve seen foreign nationals say that we “deserve” to be raided by ICE for “voting for” Trump… the dictator who ignores the popular vote. They’re on Trump’s side, they want the same things he wants, they just want to feel morally superior.
We’ll hear about it if it’s a complete peaceful shutdown. You’re wrong about protests too, we see news on those quite often.
Yeah we do, we do all the time. They actually do it properly though.
Hey, guess what, people have been trying to organize a peaceful shut down but that’s hard to do for a country about the size of a continent, and when people are already working three jobs to have enough money to survive and worried they will be homeless if they take a day off.
And no, sorry, you don’t hear about everything people are doing, because a lot of those changes happen locally. You hear about the new mayor of New York, but you don’t hear about a new progressive DEI program in a smaller town in Alabama. You don’t hear about a local neighborhood ice watch in Minnesota. You don’t hear about a petition going around in Ohio to reform voting on a local level.
You don’t hear about people starting phone trees, ride shares, food banks. Hell even people in the area might not know about them.
So sorry that what people are doing isn’t sensationalist enough to make international headlines, but it’s the sand in the gears and the level people on the ground level can actually do.
Also if you think your country’s media doesn’t have bias, then you’re ripe for indoctrination and propaganda.
You’re a total moron and there is no point explaining anything to you or arguing with you, but I’m confident that you’d tell victims of the Holocaust that they deserved it, because that’s pretty much what you’re doing now. Except unlike in Germany, the majority of the country’s population is on the list to die, rather than a relatively small group of people. The majority of Americans share characteristics that the regime wants to eliminate, and the number of hated traits are numerous, not tied only to race or religion.
It’s okay, I understand. You’re lashing out.
And you’re calling me a moron.
If you get another fair chance, just get out and vote, in both the primary and the main election. Beyond that I don’t care and I don’t care what you think of me, just get out and do it regardless who the candidate ends up being, and get your friends and family to do the same. Help anyone who can’t.
Do you genuinely believe “get out and vote” is a viable solution in the US, or is this ragebait?
Again, this is really really for real fascism, not like the kind on TV or in fiction. This is real life.
Do you know what the Electoral College is and why it exists?
Yes. The evidence suggests it’s true. So, yes.
Yes, and it didn’t stop Biden or Clinton being elected when they got enough votes did it? Yes I know what it is and I know it’s a problem. Unfortunately for the w3 cAnTd0 aNaThAng argument, it has put Democrats in as well.
Honestly, only Americans get away with this ay…continuing to make disproven arguments valid. Anyone else tried this, it’d be out of line.
… no they were not elected because of votes. I’m sure that the media made a big deal about the votes. It doesn’t actually matter, they could have just picked someone else. Democrats are the same as Republicans in terms of impact on real people. The only difference is the PR. Obama did the whole prison camp for immigrants thing too.
I didn’t say we can’t do anything.
Well, yeah you are saying you can’t do anything.
Seriously if Americans were as committed to the electoral process as they are finding excuses for the government they elected they’d have the most progressive government in the world. Being tribal about your politics isn’t committing to the electoral process either.
People are getting in ICE’s face and filming their crimes at risk to ther lives for people they’ve never met.
Good. They need to.
Peaceful shutdown from at least 60% of the population in the metro areas would be better.
When stuff like this happens, which it occasionally does, you’re not going to know about it, because you do not live here. Our press is not going to report it, because we live under real fascism, not pretend fascism from TV.
Again, not exactly true. I’ve seen some good protests. I saw ICE shoot people.
So someone’s producing news. Not that it matters, we can’t change it, only US citizens can.
Well, no, actually, we probably can’t. Hitler fell because of the Allied Forces, not because Jews and Poles banded together to beat him up.
The thing with Hitler is that there’s a template to learn from.
Hitler should have been dealt with a lot earlier than what he was. Hitler also governed a very different population and situation at the time. America isn’t where it is because it was held hostage by taxing war agreements and governed by oppressive outside influence…it’s a bunch of over indulgent and privileged arseholes being exploited.
The Germans didn’t know what was coming really. American do, and not only that they gave it a trial run.
The only similarities are the political ideology, not the countries themselves. Americans can still stop this if they want.
Trump won because the Electoral College thought a “strong Republican President” was “what the country needed.” There is absolutely nothing I or anyone in my social class could have done to influence this decision.
The difference between the Third Reich and America is that Germans had some small influence over who they elected in the form of votes that were actually counted.
No, Americans in general cannot decide who the president is. Our presidential elections are theater and have been since slavery was abolished.
So if that’s the case, how did Biden manage to win? Did the Republicans let him?
Did they let Clinton win?
Nope, if enough turn out to vote, the US will get the president they want.
You’re gonna keep inviting Trump into your country, he’s gonna keep shaking hands with your leaders, and even if he kills all of us American citizens all at once in a state-sponsored massacre and you hear about it on the news, your country will not impose sanctions, and you’ll see your leader shaking hands with him on television the following month.
Yep, here we go, my country’s equally complicit. I knew this one would come up, too.
Just because we signed a treaty and have to be diplomatic to our allies doesn’t put us in any way at fault here, and it’s not our job to fix your problem. Especially after you spent years telling us to mind our own business.
Fuck you lot are pathetic. Blame every thing else except themselves…now we are to blame because we won’t sanction your government
Stop expecting others to do your job.
So when your country’s government is complicit, it’s not your or the citizens’ fault, but when it is someone else’s country every citizen is complicit and deserves it.
Trump is an American problem, brought to America by Americans lack of voting.
Nowhere, Australia is not complicit in electing Trump and it isn’t our job to help remove him. Nor is it any other countries job. It’s yours.
Nowhere in that did our government have a hand. Murdoch certainly did, but he’s now an American citizen and went there for a reason.
We aren’t complicit in electing Trump. Yes, our leaders are still going to be diplomatic to an ally. Like every other country.
Only an American, with their extreme lack of responsibility, could hold other countries complicit in their electing Trump.
The hide of you people man. Seriously.
The balls to say one of the guys who helped make this situation happen then to say that it’s doesn’t count. If only you and your government could use those balls to do more than be a diplomatic doormat.
The wealthy elite taking over everything, abusing people, exploiting workers and the planet, these are global problems, not just American ones. A lot of the rich people live and operate outside of the US but it’s folly to think their influence is only in the US.
You’ve bought things from American companies, consumed American media, and poured your own money into their pockets.
Trump is the result of all of this. It’s the rich trying to take over our country in earnest, out in front instead of in back rooms.
And I can guarantee you, personally, played a small part in enabling it.
I also know that this conservative wave, because of Trump, has been hitting Europe and Australia. So pretending it’s not your problem is also folly.
No one is asking you to fix this for us. People are doing what they can with this takeover to stop it.
But don’t pretend you’re not in a global market and that the US isn’t tied in with Australia, and don’t pretend you’ve not given money to the people backing Trump in your own way.
He went there because the ground was fertile, as Musk and Ham did. The sit was there to begin, they just exploited it. They’re Americans through and through.
This one, electing Trump, then its effects across the world, are American.
Yes, so what? That’s international trade.
So blaming everything else again. Of course.
No I didn’t, stop spreading your problem on to others.
Yeah and we didn’t ask for it. Americans brought it to us. We’ve always had conservatives and wingnuts but not this shit. Worse, we never got a say in that, you just elected it then decided we get it too.
Yeah, they are. I had someone, might have even been you, yesterday tell me it’s on our PM and others to sanction the US. I constantly see Americans saying that other nations need to step in, do something. Americans everywhere expecting the welcome mat rolled out for running from a vote result. Fuckin oath they’re looking to distribute the responsibility out to others.
I’m not ptendng anything, I’m telling you the US caused it by not turning out to vote and that this is a US responsibility to fix. As for money I give that might be out of my control once it’s gone, there isn’t a lot in this globalised world I can do about that.Mor is there a lot I can do to avoid American market economy influence. Which could have helped enable a decent president if you wankers got out and voted.
I didn’t tell you to do anything. I don’t know you.
But yeah you shouldn’t be cowtowing to a dictator and then blaming his victims. You are not going to experience ICE raids.
I am telling you now, for the first time, because this is the first time we’ve ever spoken, to stop blaming the victims of fascism for their own oppression. He’s a dictator. It doesn’t matter how hard we vote.
I meant the collective of them telling everyone who told them to get out and vote in 2016 and prior to mind their own business and it’s Americans right not to vote
…what?
Some of us are quite aware.
