The sword in the stone was not Excalibur. Excalibur was given to Arthur by the Lady in the Lake after the sword in the stone was broken during a duel.

I think I’ve seen a webcomic featuring a big dumb barbarian wielding a boulder on a sword like this. The sword was sentient and very frustrated by its predicament. It might have eventually warmed up to the barbarian or guided him through honorable deeds.

I think it was castlevania that had a weapon that was Excalibur with the stone still attached and you could swing it like a regular weapon haha
The stone is but the tip of a buried house-size boulder, which you would be standing on, and therefore unable to lift no matter how strong.

There was a 2 part TV movie called Merlin staring Sam Neil and in that retelling the stone was actually the hand of a rock giant who held the sword until Merlin told the giant to let go.
