For the uninitiated: You need your birth time to calculate your full astrological chart. There’s definitely a looot of crazy in the western esoteric mystery tradition (loose term for the religion-lite surrounding tarot, astrology, tea leaf reading, palmistry, etc). I should know, lol.

I spent about two years learning to interpret tarot cards as a regular introspective practice. Whenever you learn one thing though, you wind up learning about the others since they all use the same spiritual model (a lot of Christian Kabbalah influence + the four element alchemy of the time, but highly syncretic with especially greco-roman mythology but also a touch of Babylonian, Zoroastrian, and new age Buddhism, and some minor Celtic or Norse influence, although the specific mix varies highly from person to person).

So anyway I also wound up learning about, history, multiple religions, and symbolism of various glyphs, plants and animals, gemstones, etc. It was fascinating and has the benefit of deterring pretentious men (although that’s less important now that I’ve picked one).

      Syncretic

I’m not sure I’ve ever heard or read that word! And, it’s real!

E: you wrote a lot – maybe it’s a bit rude to reply like I did. So, I am curious, was it beneficial? To use tarot cards as a way to be introspective?

Not the person you were replying to, but I found it useful.

The way that I saw it was that asking a particular question and doing a tarot spread for it was a way of getting some distance from the topic at hand. Like, if I am interpreting the cards/symbols and trying to understand how they fit together as a coherent answer to my question, I’m less preoccupied with actually feeling the feelings themselves (and so better able to healthily interrogate them). It reminds me of a much milder way of how therapy works (the distance of someone external is pretty important in therapy, which is why even therapists will often have their own therapist).

And there were certainly times where the cards seemed to so effectively and insightfully respond to a question that it felt uncanny, and I was like “man, I can see why so many people think that tarot has legit divinatory power”. Of course, the insight that surprised me wasn’t coming from the cards, but from me. Knowing that felt validating. Like, sometimes I’d be consulting the cards because I felt so overwhelmed by a situation that I didn’t know what to do, but “the cards” responding with the perfect plan for that situation reassured me that despite how overwhelmed I felt, the wisdom to know the best way forward was something I had within me already — I just needed a mental space to work through my thoughts.

Though the physical space helped too; the ritual of tarot — clearing a space, then unpacking and shuffling the desk — can be super grounding too.

Well it’s mostly an academic religious term and for a lot of people those two things don’t go together for one reason or another. It’s sad because they both have a lot of benefits.

And yes on the tarot cards. I actually used them in a therapy session recently because I haven’t done it in a while and I feel like that’s pretty symbolic of my current life state. It gave my therapist a lot to work with because she does EMDR and I basically started babbling about which people in my life resembled the court cards and events in my life that were similar to the pips and so on and so forth and her EMDR direction / redirection technique helped go in the right directions more consistently.

And no it’s not rude, I love TIL moments.

The only ones who really care about time of birth are astrologists, because within astrology apparently the time you were born makes a difference.

Mom is assuming that the only thing that would make OP care about when he was born is a girl who was into astrology, so she’s just skipping to the end of the conversation.

Everyone in my family knows when we were born. We’ve had some pretty interesting stories about how it all happened.

I could just as easily see that question from someone who got curious from hearing someone else’s story.

The implication is OP is asking for what time they were born so a prospective date/gf can make them a “star chart,” or astrology write-up.

Thinking back to the ‘you either make fun of astrology or get laid’-meme… Maybe I should ask my mom about my time of birth.

My honest recommendation is that you calculate your chart, then pick one thing in there that resonates with who you actually are, then emphasize that when the conversation comes up. The charts are long and messy with lots of different meanings mixed in for a reason. Even just between the sun, moon, and ascendant signs you should be able to find one of the three that describes you. If not you can look into the planet / house alignments or even just have the chart made sidereally.

It’s a small amount of information to memorize, then you can say,“oh my sun sign is Aires but honestly it’s my Libra ascendant that matters most of the time. I’m just always looking to make the world more equal.” It’ll both satisfy the person you’re communicating with while also providing them with a way to conceptualize your personality within their worldview (which is basically the entire point of dating, or even just vetting sexual partners).

Ahhh, here I was thinking the partner of mom saw this message come in, grabbed her phone and sent this. Implicating that the sender had been somehow harrassing her before, or something.

Which didn’t make a whole lot of sense, but there you are.

We tend to filter things through our personal experiences. I kind of envy the people who were purely confused or whose first thought was astrology girlfriend.

Took me a minute, but I’m guessing the mom is warning their child that any potential date or relationship with someone who believes woowoo about the significance of time of birth won’t be good for them.

I read it as you the man in the mom’s life being overly jealous and sending this response when he saw that she received a message.

Sounds crazy, and it is, but it’s not super uncommon.

You need the time, date and (I think) location to do a full astrology profile. The picture is a guy asking for the time, and the mom saying stay away from her because she knows why the guy is asking and views it as a bad sign

So I cannot tell of the other responses are real or shit responses so…

The way I read it is the mom’s response is because she believes he is asking because depending on what time he turns 18, the girl he is with may be illegal to have sex with after that time. She says stay away from her because that would be a very bad situation.

Edit: wow people are really hating on me for my interpretation of a text and response? You all are a rough crowd!

I can easily see this interpretation if I never knew someone that was so into astrology that they asked for my time of birth.

I’m not sure there’s a jurisdiction anywhere that doesn’t have some sort of Romeo and Juliet allowance. Being that the age of consent is 16 in most of America, and mostly lower in Europe, I’m scared to ask how young the girl would have to be to make him turning 18 a crime. Yikes.

It’s his birthday and he met a girl who’s just a little too young for him, according to the half plus seven rule. But maybe his time of birth hasn’t come yet, so he could be a year young-

No. She’s too young for him.

Being that the age of consent is mostly 16 in America and lower in the EU, she’d have to be 14 or 15 for Romeo and Juliet laws to not apply.
