The entire world of home IoT devices shouldn’t need an Internet connection. They should be able to work entirely based off of local network requests or other local connections (e.g. Zigbee or Thread).

It’s not an oversight, they charge another $500 for the version with control buttons on it.
But then they wouldn’t be able to force customers to send them analytics to over-pattern-recognize other companies into buying from them!

My DIY floor thermostat has a 20 cent watchdog chip that requires a ping from the main MCU every 10 seconds or it will cut power to the heater.
You remember when IOT had so much potential? Now i won’t buy anything smart that shouldnt be. And I generally try to buy hardware with an open stack.

I mean, when shit hits the fan, my team gets together and fixes the problem together, minimal testing and code stink allowed. You just get everyone who knows the system together and have it out until everyone is on the same page

I love my smart home stuff, but it’s all locally controllable. My lights will still work with the Internet out. Now if my home server goes out not so much, but at least then it’s my own fault.
I’ve got a bunch of those Hue bulbs. So the nice thing about those is if the internet or my network is down, I can just use the light switch.
Man the hue bulbs are just so expensive though. I do have Zigbee bulbs - which is the same wireless tech as Hue. I can pair my smart switches to the lights directly so that they work without any server at all however that interferes with some things I like such as I have my lights set to be different brightness and warmth depending on the time of day. And also it makes them turn on instantly while I like a more gradual turn on.

As someone who remembers what mattresses used to cost before you could buy memory foam mattresses that shipped in a small box from China, $2000 doesn’t seem that bad. My wife paid $1500 for some POS Serta mattress and box spring fron some perpetually “going out of business” mattress store when we first got together in the mid 2000s. Without checking an inflation calculator, I imagine that was the equivalent to $4k today for a lumpy mattress with springs that poked your back.
Lmao man those stores. My partner and I bought one like over a decade ago from a “going out of business” place and it’s still there when we happen to be back in that area now.
At least it didn’t overheat and get stuck at a bad angle. You knew what you were getting into back then!
