During an appearance on public broadcast service Franceinfo, Minister Delegate for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Affairs Anne Le Hénanff said VPNs might be the next target.

“If [this legislation] allows us to protect a very large majority of children, we will continue. And VPNs are the next topic on my list,” she said.

France really likes to do great things and awful things at the same time. Like, good on them for raiding Elon, but they really have to show everyone France still sucks.

The thing every privacy advocate said would happen, but every politician promised wouldn’t happen, happened. Shocker.

How will they know the difference between an HTTPS connection to a website and a corkscrew (VPN nested inside of HTTPS)?

There is also a human rights issue here. Some servers discriminate depending on where vistors come from, which is determined by IP address. Getting equal treatment sometimes requires us to appear as the unmarginalised group by using a VPN.

Banning VPNs is such a foolish move. Sure people use or need it for work and there’s a lot of legitimate reasons. Sure it protects the lives of whisteblowers and critical media but you know whats more important?? Minors on social media! Yes we should ruin the entire internet anonymity for everyone because we NEED this to protect minors (we don’t actually care about them)

The point is surveillance. If you start with the premise, “we must be able to see and read everything the public does” then this all follows. And it may have been agreed internationally in secret, since all of a sudden every country is introducing laws to require ID online and ban VPNs. It doesn’t protect children, and it doesn’t help the general population, but it does help the project of total surveillance.

You have no idea dude. The general populace, especially tired parents have no clue. Most of the parents I talk to are in favor of this. One less parenting resonsability for them. And to them their data is already available to everyone everywhere so it makes no real difference in their mind. It’s infuriatingly mindboggling.

Aaaaaaand, time to shit the bed. If there’s a way to make the wrong move at the wrong time, a politician will find it.

So here’s the thing about the Epstein files everyone’s ignoring. They had most of this evidence for DECADES.

The reality is the rich and powerful EVERYWHERE, including all our governments and secret police (aka intelligence), are filled with psychopaths, sociopaths, murderers, rapists, pedophiles, con artists… just the worst criminals imaginable, really. Capitalism actively rewards these traits with wealth and power. It’s one big club of corrupt degenerates, and 99.99% of us are not in it.

We need to stop giving pollies the benefit of the doubt, and always assume malice; always assume that they are corrupt and acting on behalf of lobbyists or other financial interests, unless there is a clear benefit for the 99% (less work for more wealth). They almost never provide any evidence this dogshit does what they say it does, and they still pass it anyway, because their handlers have given them marching orders.

Get angry, because they’re killing our planet and stealing all of our futures.

At least China has home-grown platforms that employ people and are built to suit the needs of their citizens communities. EU will have the enshittified US internet platforms they pay cloud rent to, and a neutered ability to communicate on said platforms.

Bureaucrats in the EU have exceeded their Mandate of Heaven by so long that just them opening their mouth to say “good morning” makes me wretch
