When I get back in bed with my first cup of the day, the kitty typically gets on my lap and takes a big SNIFF of it. I’ve never seen another animal be consistently interested like that- I like to imagine she’s a reincarnation who really enjoyed coffee in a past life, and this is a simple reminder of that

Once back in 2019, this little jackass landed himself in the emergency vet with a massive UTI after he drank my coffee. OK, so he also got ahold of a couple of succulents (a tiny aloe vera and a jade plant) that may have been related, but the coffee didn’t help!

So hard since what we’ve learned is that so much is genetic too, and it moves so quickly. Never knew there would be so many signs one would need to watch for; in addition to providing way more water than one would think is necessary. So sorry for you loss.

Our emergency vet visit and closest brush with death was hydration/kidney related. She peed outside of the litter box right in front of us (she normally doesn’t go outside the box save for the occasional little spite turd if we’ve been out of town) and then started vomiting, and then laid down in the blanket she peed on and her breathing was super labored. This of course happened on presidents’ day (I had the day off and was fixing my car, and therefore missed the calls from my wife until she ran out to find me), and it of course was during a blizzard. And offff course the only emergency vet open with an opening was an hour away lol. Stressful but we made it. She of course perks up a bit when she notices she’s at the vet. She’s diagnosed with a UTI and anxiety (mood), and what they called “old lady heart” (elevated proBNP1 levels if you’re interested).
That all translates to her having multiple water fountains and more wet food, and in exchange staying alive as long as she’s willing! A real win win lol
My cat was just old. She was like a month away from her 21st. birthday. Just unfortunate she had to be put to sleep since she was in a lot of pain instead of dying naturally.
Yeah for sure. I’ve only ever had dogs before her, and the amount of bonding you do with a critter over two decades compared to one is wild. Cosmic thanks for giving kitty a happy life

Yeah we got one that’s ceramic “cupcake style” (lots of different places sell versions). I liked that it’s easy to wash, and holds ~2L. And before that she would mostly drink from pint glasses lol we stash them all over too as little “Oases” for her to do s

Hahaha i see the tipped ear - another convert from the feral to cozy pipeline? Ours too. I think there’s something in them about the need/freedom to monch. Our gals a bit older and she only has 1 canine (feline?) tooth remaining, so we call it the hole-punch when she bites the christmas cactus
One of his siblings did that to him! He was a feral rescue, but we found him and the rest of his litter when they were only a few weeks old. Their mother had them in the crawlspace under the house that we were renting, and then either abandoned them or got eaten by a coyote/mountain lion/etc. I was out with the dog one night and thought I heard meowing. I told my wife and she didn’t believe me. The next morning, she heard it too, and once we figured out where it was coming from, I started removing skirt panels until we could see them to lure them out.
We found four kittens, and wound up keeping three (a friend took the fourth). Here they are before their first trip to the vet:
They had barely opened their eyes when we found them and since they only ever knew humans, the three that we kept never really learned how to “cat.” They’re all very clingy and affectionate, and the two tabbies (well, torby and tabby) are the chattiest cats I’ve ever seen.
The gray one getting into coffee and trashing houseplants was honestly kind of surprising at the time, because he’s usually the laziest out of them all.
Haha they’re so ridiculous, I love them. I had a friend with a cat named Wally from being born in the same scenario. The rescue named ours Attica since they found her and her kitten up in an abandoned house attic (Skidmore St lol)
And these lil cuties are my friends (all adopted out) who took in a mama cat (was an unofficial foster- adopted now) but she didn’t know was pregnant at first lol.
I don’t have coffee around ever, but I had a cat once that would eat lettuce and spinach from my salad. not a lot but would patiently wait for me to give him a small leaf. no dressing, please.

For sure! We’ve got a big planter of oat/wheat/rye grass and catnip that she likes to monch on. I’ve planted one outside for the outdoor cats too - they also deserve some roughage.
Side bar- our cat firmly is anti-outdoors lol I’ve taken her out with a harness and she hates it. She’ll humor it for a minute before using all of her strength to start pulling towards the door. Really liked scratching a real tree though, so I’ve been looking to build a “naturally sourced” cat tree to replicate that

They sure are! Front two are all black, rear are one for all pink beans, and one with pinto beans lol.
She’s also incredibly friendly after meeting people more than once, so the vet and techs love her (mutually) lol since they get to admire her patterns and normally torties aren’t so accommodating 😂

My old cat loved coffee grounds. When I was younger and making coffee in the morning he’d always join me and wait to see if I spilled any grounds on the floor. If I did he would roll all over in the grounds before I’d kick him out and later I would try and brush it off of him since caffeine isn’t too good for the fellas.

Go to youtube and search “cat burying coffee”. There’s hundreds of videos of cats smelling coffee and instinctively trying to bury it like it’s poop or something.
Haha I think it’s because of the high volatile compounds - particularly more of the nitrogen (ammonia?) adjacent ones. So it literally has the “essence of cat pee”.

My dickhead microgiraffe stole and ate an entire fucking bag of roast beans in the middle of the night and got really sulky at us for taking him to the vet and making him puke it all up. Has no idea how lucky he is my sister is a light sleeper.

On weekends my cat won’t stop hassling me until I brew a pot of coffee. It’s when he gets some half and half as a treat.
Love that. My gal just rubs her face on the corner scratcher until we go back to bed and consider calling in sick and snoozing all day. She doesn’t get treats from me (but only because I know my partner does haha) but I’m fairly easy to convince wrt taking the day off.

What a dignified lady! Cats can have pretty interesting interests. I would have to agree on the previous life thing. My girl seems really into whistling sounds which we thought was just birdsong related but she’s also into most woodwind music in general.
Lmao. I’m a big whistler typically, but she screams at me whenever I do so I’ve stopped 😂 I think it hurts her ears - or she just thinks I don’t do Charlie Parker justice
