What’s the practical difference between a “mandatory service fee” and a price increase?

I’d rather them just increase the prices I see on the menu instead of unexpected charges at the end. I should be able to calculate what my bill will be based on what I order on the menu.

Only reason I can think of to have a “mandatory service fee” that might make sense is if the place has live entertainment and you’re just a sitting there only ordering the free water.

You probably still pay the service fee even if you only had water to drink and didn’t buy food.

Huh. Throw out the cheating angle and what you have is a restaurant business development plan for 5 or 6 ladies you know who’d like to eat for free every night. I guess the bill comes due when they need to shake the dude loose at the end of the night and then deal with his phone calls for weeks or worse.

      Throw out the cheating angle

At this point, it’s less “cheating” and more “being trafficked by your boyfriend”

Back when I was still using online dating, it was part of the process of eliminating/reducing scammers, as well as disqualifying anyone who wanted to move to whatsapp. No idea even what portion of scammers vs legit people I eliminated that way. Eventually I was jaded enough by the whole thing that I had trouble engaging at all and just gave up on online dating.

There are plenty of services that let you use burner numbers. Hushed and Burner are some popular ones, or MySudo if you want several whole profiles (phone number, email, etc).

Or if you’re insane like me you can self-host a custom frontend for Telnyx.

I matched with two women recently who weren’t using their real name on the dating app, just first initials, A and Z. For A, I didn’t get her number until the end of our first date. For Z, she gave me her number before she gave me her real name and we still haven’t had our first date yet, busy schedules.

I find that fascinating. I just wouldn’t turn up to an internet date who wouldn’t give me their number. If safety is an issue then get a burner number.

I married an internet date and our kids are nearly teens now. 🤷‍♀️

She doesn’t have to go on the dates. They’ll spend enough on drinks, appetizers and service just waiting for her not to show. And then of course they would probably cross her off their list.

Pimping out your girlfriend could make them come back later. Gotta keep the line going up, have that growth mindset

I learned that a pimpslap is a cost-effective method of encouraging productivity that completely sidelines the necessity of a HR dept.

How come nobody talks about that service fee.

What is that even supposed to be? Is that an arbitrary increase to all prices because fuck you?

Some restaurants in the US will charge gratuity/service fees. It’s basically a scam, where the restaurant just forces you to pay extra so their menu prices seem lower, and then that money doesn’t even need to go to the waitstaff like a normal tip. Not to say it doesn’t happen, but I don’t think anywhere around me charges a mandatory gratuity to every single customer, usually just to large parties where they will require more space and likely stay longer.

Just got back from a florida vacation with my family and my parents (7 total). Just about every place we went had the “mandatory large party gratuity” which was 18%. Honeslty felt relieved that was their expectation because i usually tip more than that

American restaurants are so fucked up it’s unbelievable.

In Europe, restaurants are mandated by law to show final price on menus - including all taxes. Zero math: if I order a €9 plate, that’s exactly what I’m expected to pay, period. I might let them keep the change from a €10 note if they were particularly friendly or the food was better than expected.

Edit: that “large parties fee” is particularly stupid. If I’m making reservations for a larger group, I’ll probably discuss a menu with them ahead of time. This way they get to prepare ahead of time, and I get a cheaper price.

Also why not go in as 4 + 3 instead of 7, and avoid the fee altogether?

Because i want to be with my family?

And you don’t avoid the fee. You just tip 18 or 20% anyway. This way it just goes straight on your bill instead
