Just call it a ‘container object’ and you can be technically correct in almost every context.

See also: in SQL and Dataverse, a row is called a ‘record’, but in SharePoint and Lists, a row is called an ‘item’, and MAN do people get all pissy if you get them mixed up or refer to it as a ‘row’.

It’s even more aggravating when you understand that 1) they’re all different implementations of the ‘table’ data structure, so the term is still accurate; ‘records’ and ‘items’ are just subsets of ‘rows’, and 2) SharePoint and Lists are just SQL on the backend anyway.

Like, obviously you knew what I meant, but how is your ego gonna get stroked unless you preach about pedantic details that don’t matter?

something very similar in mainframe land where they call files “datasets.” if you call a dataset a file, get ready to get an earfull!

which is ironic considering IBM themselves often call them files and one of the most popular dataset utilities is called FileAid. but if we acknowledge that, we lose a valuable opportunity to belittle and exclude newcomers

For what it’s worth, they’re referred to as directories by command prompt and PowerShell (effectively the new Windows command prompt) tools as Windows as well.

And always had been in DOS before Windows.

Folder is just an easier concept for the average person to grok, so I say folder to them.

Anyone else catch shit for saying machine or box?

“Yeah it’s a Windows box so whatever is trying recon knows nothing and hasn’t learned after repeated attempts.”

“The Honeypot? Yeah just a Linux box that blows up our alerts channel if anyone tries to touch it.”

    Etc.

I’ve heard some techs complain that a ‘machine’ can be physical or virtual, but a ‘box’ always refers to a physical machine. I don’t really agree with that distinction; if the difference matters, say “physical machine” or “virtual machine”. In 99% of cases, whether a machine is physical or virtual is a distinction without a difference anyway.

We see where you’re coming from, and also it is unhealthy to be extremely sensitive to every single hint of bigotry, from malicious or innocent sources, from your instance or others’. Take it from me - it destroys you to focus on the negative so much that you start to miss the positive.

I know you put so much effort into taking care of others, particularly transfolk (who don’t get themselves kicked out 😉) on blahåj.zone. Remember to care for yourself also!

Had to check the community rules, but couldn’t find them calling this place a trans community. In fact, they explicitly call it a “meme community” and this is a very common meme format. If you’re inclined to check the rules yourself, I’d like to point you to number 3

This is absolutely a trans-inclusive community, it just isn’t spelled out (e: it is now) because inclusion should be natural. I don’t like making assumptions about a person’s identity or beliefs (unless they scream it to the heavens, at which point it isn’t an assumption anymore), and I can’t determine whether a person is welcome here based on what they are. When a person’s behaviour becomes problematic, that is when I step in. In particular, if someone reports a homophobic, transphobic, or racist comment, you won’t see me argue with them: those comments get immediately deleted and the user permanently banned. Fortunately, nearly all community members I’ve seen are friendly, or at least polite, with LGBTQ+ folk.

Regarding the meme in question. There is an argument to be made that just using the media as a meme, even of an unrelated topic, gives the author unwanted exposure. I don’t think this applies in this community, or most of the fediverse (excepting places like Grad or Hexbear). We all know that JK is morally inferior to what came out of my dog this morning. Seeing this meme won’t change that position, nor does it try to glorify her morals or justify her views. It is the essential meme: a well-known scene from popular culture, removed from its environment, to express an idea or sentiment that is common within this demographic.

There’s a lot of trans people in linux and foss communities

in a community full of trans folk

which by the phrasing is what Ada is saying, not that it’s specifically a trans community

It’s not. It’s just a scene from a movie. Aim your artillery at that c—nt Rowling, instead.

I liked the meme, keep em coming!
