Amatures.

At least you have a road that reaches diagonally across WA. If Alaska did it would take a lot longer than that
Windsor to Sioux Lookout is similar if you stay in Ontario.

Shoulda started on the southern Maine border. You can touch 10 states in about 8 hours.
(ME NH MA RI CT NY NJ PA DE MD)Yeah, the east coast is great for just collecting states. Come out west, and some states can take 12 hours to cross – a mostly straight corridor.
They both never leave the country
In Europe, 200km is a long distance
In the US, 200 years is a long time
Meanwhile, Texas

California is pretty similar if you’re going north to South… if you avoid commute hours. Then you’re looking at. 16 hour drive.
That’s the joke. Americans say Europeans can travel 8 hours and touch x number of states but in America you don’t leave any.
Hop a train, and you’re in another country quick though.
You should check out Western Australia. Texas is tiny in comparison.

Ok, and?
what’s the “highway speed” in Italy? Is it 90kph?
Well:

I think you can also drive in California in a straight line for 16 hours. I mapped it once during a slow work day lol
Yeah, I5 will take you from Mexico to Canada. And that drive across CA is long as shit when you’re going north to South.
And CA has some world-famous high-traffic spots around places like LA, which makes it even worse during commute hours.
San Diego to Oregon is, IMHO, better done as a 2 day drive. And both of those days are still going to suck.
If you’re on the road, it’s wise to hit peak outside of urban centers.
What’s with the dip down to Marfa? I mean, it would be dark by the time you go there, so I guess watch for the lights?
Idk tbh. Not sure why this route detoured instead of staying on the highway, but it only shaves off like 45 minutes
You can fly a passenger plane at full speed in a straight line for 10 hours and still be in France.
I assume this is referring to French Guiana. You can say you start in France and end in France. But I would say it’s unreasonable to say you’re still in France, you left France and stayed out of it for the majority of the trip
Not my fault France has shitty planes /s
Now seriously, airspace above international waters does not count
Well… as there is no speed limit on german highways, you could theoretically visit every part of germany within ten minutes including one stop at a doener-man, to get a doener.
And I would rather be in Germany than any of those states.
Hey, fuck you buddy!
I’m not your buddy, friend!
I’m not your friend, guy!
I’m not your guy, dude!
Fuck yeah lad.
And how many German “Länder” did that trip drive through? Drive for 8 hours, still in US; drive for 8 hours, still in Germany would be more correct.
Anyway, back to your regularly scheduled shitposts…
4 to 8.
Depending on the exact starting point and route.
i constantly hear stories of Europeans who won’t visit family because the drive is too long. i ask how long and they’re like “20-30 minutes” lmao. it has taken me that long to get to the store in some places I have lived in the US lol
That’s because you also have an American car.
Badum tss…
Does that say something about European travel, or European families?
probably
Europeans were so insistant on getting freedom of movement in the EU just to not fucking use it.
We just take the train
That’s true freedom
Good for them dismantling an injustice on principle.
On the other hand, they would need to learn 5 languages in case they need to ask for directions on that travel.
The question is, how many states will you visit during that drive through Germany?
And at what speed (Autobahn!)
Yeah, the creators of the meme kind of bungled the punchline by choosing another federation as the European example. Because you literally will drive through several German states as well.
They should have chosen France or Poland, or Sweden, I think most people underestimates how big Sweden is in an European perspective.
I mean, it is a shitpost in the shitposting community
Bungling the meme, if anything, is right on brand lol
I count 7.
I only count one. Mostly because I only know of one and its location with certainty.
Germany is subdivided into Bundesländer = states.

I know. I just never bothered to learn them, on the account of being scandinavian.
But I picked up somewhere somehow at some point that Munchen is in Bayern.
That’s fine, it’s the most important one anyway.
Signed, a totally not biased Bavarian
Right, it’s the one place you’ll want to avoid at any cost. The only sign that allows you to do a U-turn on the highway is “Willkommen in Bayern”.
Signed, a definitely biased Swabian
Certainly not a Bavarian Swabian.
But tbh Bavaria should be split up anyway. Bavarian Swabia should go to BW, Franconia should be its own state and Old Bavaria should be split into occupation zones.
we should have pushed Bavaria to Austria… :)
– greetings from Hamburg
Agree, with love from Baden-Württemberg.
Looking at the map, I think I’ve actually been to all of them except Brandenburg and Saarland.
EDIT: Unsure about Thüringen. And upon checking the autobahn map, I may have briefly been to Saarland.
Germany has the Autobahn system and thus relatively short travel times. I’m pretty sure even smaller countries like Latvia have two points separated by an 8+ hour drive!
🇱🇻 stronk!
Now I’m curious what speed these mapping sites assume for the autobahn when predicting travel time.
Idk about Google Maps but Mapy.cz allows buses to go hella fast

How?
You can see the real time, which means the 1 min is pulled from a timetable, from 2 stations actually very close together (and named similar, too). They imported OSM data wrong, one of the stops is at the nearest road segment to 50°N 10°E. It has been fixed since.
Edit: actually not quite!
https://mapy.com/en/turisticka?l=1&source=pubt&id=28582585&ds=1&x=10.0007124&y=50.0001362&z=17This time though, it’s the Z-M Gewerbegebiet stop and it has no timetables associated with it, unlike the real Z-M Gewerbegebiet in the shopping district of Zella-Mehlis. Planning a trip by public transport therefore falls back to an hour-long walk from the nearest stop in Arnstein, for a total travel time of about 5 hours (as opposed to 1 hour by car) from the real Zella-Mehlis.
130 km/h as that is the “recommended” or “default” speed (Richtgeschwindigkeit in german)
It’s also possible to drive through about ten countries in 8 hours in Central Europe.
I think any definition of Central Europe that includes 10 countries is really stretching it. Anyway, Poland-Slovakia-Czechia-Austria-Hungary-Slovenia-Croatia-B&H (8) should be barely possible to visit in an 8-hour trip over much of one former big country.
Well that’s about ten.
And at least 3 are Southern Europe.
Close enough.

A state is part of a country and comparing a state to a country in this context didn’t make sense. “Hey this subregion is smaller than your region”. In the same area you drive through at least 4 Germany states.
If you really want to play look at this.
22h without leaving a single Canadian province https://maps.app.goo.gl/2vWuVHRCt4F8ckSL8?g_st=ac
If Germany was a US state, it would be the fifth largest by land area, but its population of 83mil is more than the two most populous US-states combined (CA 39mil + TX 32mil ≈ 71mil). Its top three states, population-wise (NW 18mil, BY 13mil, BW 11mil) would individually make it into the top ten (with BW being #10, so it’d get pushed out if we also add the other two).
So, yeah, the comparison isn’t really fair.
Uh, you can drive for longer than that and still be in the same province here in Canada.
I mean, just using this general location, if you started in Chicago and went south on 57 out of Chicago, you might still be in Illinois at the end of the trip.
You can drive for double that and be in the same province.
Texas is tiny.
If you’re willing to drive N/S, the Prairies are like 775 miles tall. Quebec is like 1250 miles tall and is the size of like, France, Germany and the UK combined.
Canada is basically the same size as Europe with like 5% of the population.
Yup. Just checked in Ontario, and if you want to drive from Windsor to Kenora, that’s a 24 hour drive. If you shortcut through the US, it’s only 19 hours
